Kneecap: you need to be examined for correct diagnosis but it sounds like your kneecap may be the cause.squatting loads the kneecap into the trochlea(groove in femur bone) and can irritate the kneecap cartilage(chondromalacia).Try stretching your hamstrings more before squats/lunges etc.Ibuprofen may be helpful.See an orthopedic surgeon if cont'd pain/popping after discussing w/parent(s). best of luck! ...Read more

Probably bursitis: Knee pain especially on kneeling is suggestive of bursitis most likely prepatellar bursitis. There are numerous fluid filled sacs on the knee joint that help lubricate it. Sometimes they get inflamed. Rest and and applying ice can help. A consultation with a physician may be warranted to do further work up such as ordering x-rays to rule out possible fracture. ...Read more

Cartilage wear: You may have patellofemoral syndrome or wear of the cartilage under the kneecap, also called chondromalacia patella. Need X-ray : If you haven't done so already, you need to be examined and have an x-ray. It is possible that you have fractured/broken your knee cap which sometimes requires surgery or at least a brace or cast. If not, then most likely you have sustained a contusion or bone bruise which should improve with time. Other possibilities exist as well & are best determined by an orthopedic evaluation. ...Read more

Several thoughts: Pain below your kneecap area which is the patella tendon can be caused from inflammation of the patella tendon. It can also be from arthritis under the kneecap. There are also skin disorders and bursitis that can cause pain in this area. You really need to get a good physical examination to be able to make the true diagnosis. Seek out the advice of an orthopedic surgeon to help you. ...Read more

Likely bursitis: Sounds like inflammation of the prepatellar bursa (flattened sac that provides protective layer between knee and skin). Usually a result of prolonged kneeling or other "wear-and-tear". Rest (avoid kneeling) and sometimes a knee wrap for protection is helpful. If no contraindications, can use nsaids for inflammation. See a physician for an exam to be sure. ...Read more

Early wear and tear: Pain coud be due to irritated/early wear of the patella cartilage or the surface cartilage of the thigh bone that rubs against the patella (try knee sleeve with a cutout for knee cap). Other causes could include patellar tendonitis (try knee strap) or a plica and osgood schlatters. For starters avoid kneeling, stairs, knee extension machines, deep squats, lunges etc. Try therapy, ice, advil/alleve. ...Read more

Chondromalacia: Very likely this represents roughened/damaged cartilage behind the kneecap termed patellar chondromalacia. 1st line treatment can include quadriceps, gluteal and hamstring strengthening; it band stretching and a knee brace that stabilizes the kneecap.
