Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

What is the more accurate due date ur last period or the mesurments of the baby?

Earliest: Due date is best determined by earliest data. For example early ultrasound (less than 12 weeks) consistent with last perod is very realiable at determining due date. I have aleays understood that as time goes on ultrasound measurements less realiable at detetmining due date. ...Read more

Hi is the any mistake in ultrasound result for 11 days in the 6th week of pregnancy?

Hi is the any mistake in ultrasound result for 11 days in the 6th week of pregnancy?

Pregnancy dating: I assume by you mean a discrepancy in size? A first trimester ultrasound is considered "consistent" with dating by lmp if measurement is within 7 days of the gestational age by lmp. A 1st trimester ultrasound is a more accurate way to date a pregnancy in most cases because due date based on lmp assumes that you had a 28 day cycle and ovulated on day 14. Many woman do not have a 28 day cycle. ...Read more

Is the age shown on an ultrasound measured from LMP or conception? The US said 5w1d. If this is from LMP, conception would be after I got a pos. test

From LMP but..: ...If the sonographic dating was obtained from measuring the "mean gestational sac size", its margin error may be wide and it may be inaccurate. If it was determined from the average of 3 measurements of a "crown rump length" by a certified experienced sonographer, it is more reliable and precise. A repeat scan in a few weeks may be valuable. ...Read more

How important is the date of the last menstrual period in relation to the actual ultrasound dating?

How important is the date of the last menstrual period in relation to the actual ultrasound dating?

Depends: For an early sono the lmp is less significant since early on, the sono dates are felt to be more accurate. If a patient shows up in the third trimester for her first sono the lmp dates are more important since they are usually a better guess of the actual fetal age. The sono is then used to try to estimate fetal size and growth on subsequent scans. ...Read more

What is the lowest number of days it is possible after ConceptioN, to see a gestational sac with cells attached to the wall,on a sonogram/ultrasound?

What is the lowest number of days it is possible after ConceptioN, to see a gestational sac with cells attached to the wall,on a sonogram/ultrasound?

Once betaHCG >1000: Blood levels of betaHCG are better and often more reliable than last menstrual period (LMP) or suspected "conception day" and best correlated with the sonographic findings of current transvaginal ultrasound. Once the betaHCG levels pass 1000mIU/ml, most skilled sonographer may detect a small intrauterine gestational sac , as a first sonographic finding. ...Read more

Will an ultrasound know the difference between implantation bleeding and a period or would that cause my due date and date of conception to be wrong?

Will an ultrasound know the difference between implantation bleeding and a period or would that cause my due date and date of conception to be wrong?

Confuses the dates: An ultrasound will measure the size of the pregnancy which will tell you how to interpret the bleeding. If it was "implantation" bleeding the pregnancy will be farther along than if it was a period. You will adjust the due date and date of conception accordingly. ...Read more

How is a due date derived from an ultrasound that measures fetal age?

US: Evidence suggests that, in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, due dates generated by the first ultrasound may the most accurate tool for predicting your baby's birth by calculating out the 9 month gestation. But ultrasound due dates have a margin of error of roughly 1.2 weeks, so drs will usually keep the original due date (from your last menstrual period date) if the ultrasound due date is close. ...Read more
