I am 21 years old and every year when it starts to get cold i get severe knee pain at night. What does that signify?

Inflammation probabe: There is no scintific evidence why some people get pain in the knees when it gets cold, it seems you get some inflammation in the knee joints and you may take Aleve (naproxen) or Motrin to relive these symptoms if you are not allegic and can tolerate it but people with preexisting arthritis can feel the pain get worse or start when it gets cold so have it checked by your doctor. ...Read more

I am 68yrs and have been experiencing knee pain. I have never had this problem until 3 weeks ago. Any reason why this could be happening?

Knee pain: At 68, it is very common to have age related wear and tear (arthritis) that can flare up periodically. Also, cartilage tears (meniscus) are common even without a remembered injury or cause. If it does not settle down with ice/rest/low impact exercise/nsaids then see a doctor for an evaluation and treatment recommendations. ...Read more

Im32 yo n having pain in both knees have hypothyroidism what could be the reason of this knee pain/joints pain no swelling just feel loose n painful ?

Something systemic?: Bilateral knee pain and thyroid problems doesn't ring any bells but at your age it does suggest you be worked up for something systemic going on. I would look for markers of general inflammation in your blood and might even consider looking for an auto-immune etiology if nothing apparent on physical exam. There are even some viruses that can cause transient arthralgias. ...Read more

Chronic knee pain for 10 months on medial and lateral side of joint. Uric acid is normal, RA and ANA test negative. Pain better on piroxicam, reason?

See rheumatology: There are many reasons for the knee pain you described. At your age, an injury in the past is one of the most common. The lab tests are not a reliable way to diagnose your problem. You should see a rheumatologist or if you have had an injury an orthopedist for a diagnosis before anything else ...Read more

My father has knee pain. His work makes him stand for many hours. The doctor advised just to have more rest. But its hard for him to do so. Advise plz.

Difficult when: Work is needed but pain is constantly there. I would suggest asking if there is anyway to sit during work. Assuming knee pain is basic osteoarthritis and not acute injury, try different shoes and include a lateral shoe wedge to offload the medial compartment. Also institute a strengthening program to work on quad and hamstring strength to support the knee. I hope employer allows position change. ...Read more

I am 18 years old, been having knee pain for almost my entire life. The pain is in the backs of my knees and radiates down my shin. What could this be?

Hard to say: Knee pain your entire life would tend to mean that it is not an acute or progressive problem like a fracture, ligament injury, muscle tear or even tumor. Chronic things include arthritis, meniscus, or even vascular. There are long lists of things that it could be but you really need to see a specialist like an orthopedic surgeon who can examine your knee and do images to get a better answer ...Read more
