What Is The Reagent Found In Fecal Occult Blood Test
Fecal occult blood testing is a tool you use at home to detect tiny amounts of blood in your stool. This may suggest that there is a polyp or cancer as the cause of the bleeding. Although the vast majority of positive tests for occult blood do not have a cancer, a positive result means you should have another test (such as colonoscopy) ...Read more
No: Lukas, you're a grown man now and you recognize that you have health concerns that are unrealistic. In a way it's good -- you'll be more vigilant -- but if these fears are preventing you from finding the peace you need to work, play and love, then some structured self-exploration might set you free. Be brave, and best wishes.

I had an fecal occult blood test that is positive, waiting to see a GI Dr. This morning my BM had some visible blood in it. Should I get help sooner.
No: Your life's only in danger if you develop black tarry stools, vomit blood, or go into shock, all of which will be obvious. Finding visible blood after a bowel movement, especially a difficult one, doesn't increase the urgency of a search for cancer, which is what the principal concern is in this case. Best wishes.
Best see your doctor: There are 4 main types. Fecal immunochemical testing (fit)/immunochemical fecal occult blood test (ifobt), stool guaiac test for fecal occult blood (gfobt), fecal porphyrin quantification (hemoquant), and fecal dna test or pregen-plus. The stool guiac is the most proven, and can be done at home. But it is best to see your doctor since he/she can order it and a positive test must be followed up.
Best to see your Dr.: This is done by 4 main methods. Fecal immunochemical testing that uses antibodies to detect globin, stool guaiac test for fecal occult blood which involves reaction of stool to hydrogen peroxide, fecal porphyrin quantification or hemoquant which measures hemoglobin, and fecal dna test/the pregen-plus which measures dna. It would be wise to check with your doctor and get tested accurately.
Possibly: The materials do cost something to someone, however more importantly, doing the test at home can be unreliable. Better to have it performed by a professional who can interpret it correctly for you. Check with your pcp.
Stool exam: There are several tests that can be done on stool. Tests could be for infection by bacteria or parasites. Tests could show inflammation or digestive disorders. The occult blood tests shows microscopic quantities of blood in the stool that could come from several reasons from hemorrhoids, polyps, diseases, ulcers or even a tumor.See 1 more doctor answer
How much percentage of people have Cancer when Fecal occult blood test is positive? I waiting fora follow up appointment with a GI Dr.
Small incidence: About 25% of positive fecal occult blood tests are associated with cancer. The majority of the tests miss a cancer which may not release blood into stool or detect blood from intermal hemorrhoids or fissures in rectum. Blood tests to define gene mutations more accurate but don't guarantee tumor presence, only potential for developing malignancy. New tests detect shed tumor protein in stool.
"Hunger pains" that come on at night or between meals. Dr did a fecal occult blood test which was positive. Referred to GI. What's this even mean?
Don't freak out, ok?: A "fecal occult blood" test is a way of checking for bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract. It is a SCREENING test, and therefore, it is known to be falsely-positive at times, & can even be thrown off by certain OTC meds, for example. In a young (23yo) person, I would be looking for a bleeding ulcer in the stomach or small intestine, but even a bleeding hemorrhoid could cause a + test result.
Fecal occult blood test stool card? I know how to smear stool on the card. But when I close the card, isn't it gonna get the card all dirty inside?
FOBT--how it works: If you're using the old hemoccult slide, you'll notice its two-sided. You place your specimen on one side, and close the lid. The doctor or lab, when developing your specimen, turns the card over, opens the back (its clean on that side), and applies the developer solution which soaks thru to your specimen. If a color change, the doctor or lab knows your specimen contains invisible blood.
Not specific: Fecal occult blood tests detects peroxide activity in the fecal matter. Peroxidase activity is associated with hemoglobin, but not specific to it. Horse radish, among other things, has peroxidase activity, as does blood in meats. Fobt may be positive for any bleed from gums to hemorrhoids but is not specific for any diagnosis. It is a screening test, which if positive, needs more tests.
FOBT is screen: Fobt is designed to test for blood in stool. Blood in stool may be due to any bleeding in the GI tract from the gums to the anus; and there are false positives also. If fobt is positive, colonoscopy is generally recommended to look of colon cancer. Fobt per se is not a diagnostic test for cancer, just blood in stool.See 3 more doctor answers
No: Occult blood in stool suggests a point of bleeding from area near appendix across the colon to the rectum. This could be AV malformation, bleeding polyp, tumor, hemmorhoid or fissure. When blood is detected it has to be defined as to origin. Occassionally colonoscopy will reveal a lesion. Newer stool tests for tumor protein more accurate.
I waiting to see a GI Dr for positive fecal occult blood test. Having heavy aching and bloating feeling in lower ab If it gets worse should I go ER?
It depends: If you start to see blood or something that looks like coffee grounds in stool, get weak or dizzy or get severe pain or fever, or cannot pass any stool you should. Otherwise, let the doc who referred you to the GI that you are now having more symptoms and see if your appointment can be moved up.See 1 more doctor answer
