Duration Of A Fever In Children
Depends...: Fever of unknown origin is typically diagnosed after a fever of 4-6 weeks without any discernable cause; however, the grade of fever is an important characteristic. Most febrile illnesses last no more than 1-2 weeks; so you should have the child examined by his/her pediatrician to help discern the cause and prescribe treatment. ...Read more
How long is a fever contagious? I had 102 last night and now I have 99. I work with children...Is taking a rest day a good idea
Yes: Most viral illnesses are likely spreading live virus in the saliva and respiratory secretions for up to 24 hours after the fever stops. Good hand washing and wearing a mask can contain most of the spread, but a 24 hour period fever free is considered the best way to stop spread. If the issue were something like strep throat, treatment would need to be underway for 24 hrs before it was contained. ...Read more
Does fever in children stay the same during the cold virus. My 3 year olds fever was 100.5 first 3 days and 102.5 the last 2. His congestion is better?
It cycles: Viruses are actually famous for having cyclic fevers, up one minute and gone the next. That's why schools have a 24 hour no-fever policy, since it can be difficult to tell if the illness is truly gone or if it's just in a "down cycle". As long as the fever responds 2-3 degrees to tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin and other symptoms are improving, he should be fine. ...Read more
My 4yr old son has allergies & asthma which his allergies have been a issue over the last 10 days he suffers the last 2 nights I have giving him childrens benedryl. Tonight he has a fever of 103.3, not sure what to do because he's fine during the day.
My son had some upper respiratory issues, I thought it was hay fever. I treated him with children's Benadryl before bed last night, and today I got a call from the school nurse saying he had hives. I suspect he is actually allergic to the Benadryl, since
Unlikely: In decades of treating children I have never seen one allergic to this allergy med. I suppose there could be a reaction to a preservative or dye in any liquid form, but the idea doesn't make sense. Any hives he has may be related to either the illness (mycoplasma can produce hives), a new food or drink or a separate exposure at home or school. ...Read more

Sounds: Sounds like the flu shot worked for you children. See a doctor!: The site of infection would determine the treatment. Not all fever is an infection that requires antibiotic therapy so I would see a doctor if fever persists to decide if an infection is present or if there is another reason for this problem. Most fevers without severe symptoms are usually viral infections that go away within 3-7 days. ...Read more
? Teething Fever?: I'm not convinced kids have teething fever & if they do it would be low grade at most. Since teething can encompass the first 3 yrs & the are due for 5-7 respiratory & 3 diarrheal illness/yr at the same time there is bound to be some overlap. I would be concerned with persistent fever in a kid whose feeding & activity decline & want that kid seen. If playful & happy during the process, just monitor. ...Read more
