What Is The Evolutionary Advantage Of Preventing Self Fertilization
Sorry,a follow up question to the previous. Will the morning after pill prevent fertilization/implantation in the egg knowing that they are ovulating?
No: The morning-after pill works by delaying ovulation. Sperm hang around for several days but no pregnancy will occur if ovulation is delayed until the sperm are all gone. If an egg is already there, the morning after pill doesn't prevent fertilization or implantation. The good news is that the egg is viable for a short time, not days and days. Not entirely. Ideal: ..cervical mucus is clear and elastic (stringy). This type of mucus helps sperm get through the very tiny opening of the cervix into the uterus & then on to the fallopian tube where an ovum can be fertilized. Never underestimate the determination of those little critters, however. Some can & do penetrate the cervix through mucus that's less than ideal. It only takes one! Good luck! ...Read more
Do the birth-control pills prevent fertilization or they just prevent the fertilized egg to attach to the uterus?
Multi - ways: Birth control pills work in many ways depending on the type (ie Progesterone only or combination pills). The main function is to stop ovulation from occurring. If no egg is released then there is no egg to fertilize. If this fails and an egg is made and released - the secondary defense is thinning the lining to prevent embryos from implanting. They also effect cervical mucus. ...Read more

Is there a type of birth control pill that doesn't prevent implantation? (Just ovulation/fertilization?) Thanks
Works in pituitary: The estrogen in the pill alters the normal feedback to the pituitary gland, which in turn prevents the changes (rise) in fsh (follicle stimulating hormone) and lh (luteinizing hormone) levels which lead to ovulation, which is the release of the egg from the ovary. Since the egg doesn't leave the ovary, it is not physically accessible for the sperm to fertilize it. ...Read more
Same way as anybody: Else. First, pick a quit date and make preparations (clean your room - including walls and fabrics) get your space smoke free (esp your car, if you drive). Call a smoking cessation program in your area (1-800-quitnow can help). For some people cold turkey works, but nicotine replacement (patches, gum etc.), certain meds (chantix, zyban) and a formal cessation program can help. Good luck with it! ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
It's a challenge: While there is some evidence that allergies may be delayed or prevented through intervention in infancy, there is not much an adult can do. The risk of developing allergies is in part based on genetics--higher risk if parents are allergic and environmental exposure. One way to avoid specific allergies is to avoid those occupations that carry high risk such as crab processing, sawmill work, etc. ...Read more
