Doctors, what is the difference between ectopic heartbeat and palpitations?

Doctors, what is the difference between ectopic heartbeat and palpitations?

Terminology: Palpitations are the symptoms one feels when there is an abnormal heart rhythm. Ectopic heart beat means that some of your heart beats originate in a part of your heart is that is not the normal site of origin (the "sinus node".). Ectopic heart beats sometimes (but not always) leads to palpitations. Most ectopic beats go unnoticed.

What is the difference between palpitations and ectopics and irregular heartbeats?

Senstation: Palpitations are the sensation of feeling you heart beat in your chest. It may be physiological or physical. Irregular heart beats is a broad term that means your heart beat is not the normal ekg doctors are used to seeing. An ectopic heart beat is an irregular beat where the electrical source is not the sa node (sinoatrial node). I hope that helps clear things up.

Sensation vs. Rhythm: Palpitations are the sensation of skipping or abnormal heart beats. These might be from abnormal beats, or just the normal rhythm beating fast or stronger than normal. Heart arrythmias are actual, documented (by ekg, holter, event monitor) abnormal heart contractions.

Is there a difference between heart palpitation and skipping beats, I think I feel mine skipping a lot thru the day well all day what would u call that?

Defined: Palpitations are, by definition "an uncomfortable or abnormal awareness of one's own heartbeat." the most common forms of this, which we call pacs or pvcs, are not in fact skipped beats but rather a single extra beat or two which cause a "pause" afterward, making it feel like a skipped beat.

How do you tell the difference between an esophagus spasm and a heart palpitation?

How do you tell the difference between an esophagus spasm and a heart palpitation?

See below: Esophagus spasm would be more likely to produce pain whereas palpitation is usually a fluttering sensation. The word palpitation refers to the feeling in the chest but it usually implies that the problem is an irregular pulse. An EKG would determine if the heart rhythm is regular or not. Sometimes we have to hook the patient up to a 24 hour monitor to catch the irregularity.

What's the difference between afib, palpitations and rapid heart rate?

Atrial fibrillation: Is a specific diagnosis that means the top chambers od the heart beat erratically and and only occasiona electrical impulses get through to the bottom chambers. It can be rapid afib (fast) or contolled rate (normal rate). Palpitations are just the sensation of the heart beating, fast irregular or slow. It is a symptom not a diagnosis.

How can a doctor tell the difference between anxiety palpitations and heart problems on a 48hour heart monitor? What's the difference?

How can a doctor tell the difference between anxiety palpitations and heart problems on a 48hour heart monitor? What's the difference?

See below: The idea of the monitor is to see exactly what your heart is doing while you have symptoms. It's important to write down when exactly you felt something, to correlate with the measurements. Often we will see that it is a benign "skipped beat" or PVC. We also check for dangerous heart rhythm abnormalities that can feel like anxiety.

Hi I'm not sure how to tell the difference in a palpitation and and a esophageal spasm. These feelings aren't really "painful" just very uncomfortable?

Get a monitor done: Best way is to have an event monitor done. You should take careful notes about your symptoms (spasm, palpitations) and time of day, so that your doctor can determine whether these correlate to an arrhythmia. The esophagus is in contact with the left atrium and spasms can produce the feeling of palpitation.

There seems to be a difference of opinion, what would you class as an adequate cardiac work up for palpitations, chest pain and lightheaded?

There seems to be a difference of opinion, what would you class as an adequate cardiac work up for palpitations, chest pain and lightheaded?

It depends.: The practice of diagnosis in medicine is complex & depends on how well the doctor knows risk factors, including past medical history & pretest probabilities. A person with chest pain, palpitations & light-headedness may get cardiac monitoring & serial enzymes in an emergency room. However, if she is seen by a doctor who knows her health history she may just get an electrocardiogram & reassurance.
