Hypoparathyroid ca 8.3. Low vitamin d now. On calcitriol. 5 mcgs. How is it possible that I am low? And which type of vitamin d inactive or activeform

Depends what taking: There are several stages in producing active vitamin d. The dietary form is converted into 25hydroxyvitamin d which is then converted in the kidney to 1, 25 dihydroxy vitamine d (the "active" form. The usual vitamin d lab test looks for 25 hydroxyvitamin d; Calcitriol is 1, 25 dihydroxyvitamin d. So if you are taking Calcitriol you may have plenty of active vitamin d but a low level of 25 hydroxy. ...Read more

What is the difference between osteopenia and osteoporosis? What effect does nutrients like calcium and vitamin d have on these conditions?

Matter of degree: Osteopenia can simply refer to loss of bone substance (density) on x-rays. It can also mean bone loss not severe enough to be called osteoporosis. Is there a difference between vitamin d and vitamin d-3?

General vs specific: Vitamin d supplements are either vitamin d2 (ergocalcipherol) or vitamin D3 (cholecalcipherol). D2 is plant derived and D3 is animal derived. Some believe they are equivalent to one another, but most vitamin d authorities and studies I've found say that D3 is more bioavailable, which means the body uses it better. There has been an explosion of information about vitamin d in the last 15 years. ...Read more

Is there a difference between calcium/vitamin d supplements and drinking milk?

Is there a difference between calcium/vitamin d supplements and drinking milk?

Yes, for vitamin D: Milk has only 400 iu of vitamin d per quart and most people need 2000-5000 iu per day to get their blood level above 50 ng/ml. So you would have to drink at least 5 quarts of milk to get enough vitamin d. The vitamin d level is enough for an infant but not for an adult. ...Read more

Vitamin D3 really good for u. My vitamin D is low....?

Then take Vit D!!!: Low D is associated with chronic pain, increased risk of heart disease & cancer & reduced longevity. In spring & summer we can get adequate D from mid-day sun without protection. In fall & winter the only way for EVERYONE in the US (except deep South) to get enough D is to take D3- most adults need 5-8000 iu of D3/day for optimal levels.

What will happen if I take an extra b-12, vitamin d, and vitamin e?

Vitamin B/D/E: If you are eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, you probably don't need to take vitamin supplements. Regarding your question, B-12 is water-soluble and therefore if you take excess amount, you will excrete it in the urine. However, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) can be toxic if taken in excess. Recommend discussion with your primary care physician before embarking on vitamin supplementation. ...Read more

Are there different tests for Vitamin D & Vitamin D3? Specifically: Vitamin D3 (25 OH D) and 25 (OH) Vitamin D?

Yes: When there is a reason to test, testing for 25-OH-VitD2 level and for 25-OH-VitD3 level, plus adding the results to get the total vitamin D level, can help the doctor check the source of the vitamin deficiency and the treatment progress. There is debate over when it would be needed to do these tests. Some doctors feel that giving people more vitamin D would avoid deficiencies and avoid lab tests. ...Read more

Vitamin d 50, 000 iu. Will it come in D3 prescription or d2 only. Which one is better to use in such strength.

D2 only but take D3: The 50, 000 iu form of d is vitamin d2. I don't know why doctors prescribe this as research shows it increases mortality by 2% whereas vit d3 reduces mortality by 6%.I advise stopping dangerous d2 ; taking d3- most adults need 5-8, 000 iu/day to achieve optimal levels of 50-80- best to take with vits a;k. Yes, however...: Normal levels of Vit D are 30-100, though 50-80 is the optimal level. Achieving good levels helps prevent heart disease, cancer, autoimmune disease, infections etc.
In fall & winter all adults should take 5-8000 iu/day. In spring and summer spending about 20 min. In mid-day sun without sunscreen can give enough D but if you don't do that take year-round. Best with K. Many good brands- see comment: ...Read more

MY VITAMIN D IS 23 L IS IT OK TO STILL TAKE MY MULTIVITAMIN THAT HAS 400IU VITAMIN D & WANT TO TAKE VITAMIN D3 1000?

Not a problem: The amount of vitamin D in a multivitamin is a small daily requirement dose. If you are being prescribed a supplement for low vitamin D levels, the amount in your daily vitamin is not significant. You can continue it without worry.

Please don't treat your own vitamin D levels - too much vitamin D can have toxic side effects as it builds up in your body. ...Read more

Can b 12 injections cause stomach or intestinal issues in rare cases like vitamin d injections? If so what kind of issues can it cause?

Not to my knowledge: This is extremely unlikely based on basic medical science. People are going to see whatever they want as cause-and-effect, but i'd urge you strongly to seek some other reason for whatever symptoms referable to the stomach and small bowel & not to be satisfied until it's found. Have you been checked for giardia / celiac sprue / whipple's / chronic pancreatitis -- all can get overlooked. ...Read more

Best natural non-supp ways of getting vitamin d, b-12? The sun of course for d but what else?

Be careful: Sunlight and vitamin d fortified foods (typically dairy) are your source for vitamin d. Hard to get otherwise. B12 is in almost all food of animal origin. If you are a vegetarian or cannot absorb vitamin b12, you will ruin your health if you do not take a supplement (they're made from natural products like your food is), whatever anybody else may have told you. ...Read more
