Hida Scan (Definition)

Patient is injected intravenously with isotope tagged to chemical hida that is extracted preferentially by liver cells mimicking bile. Some of this is stored in gall bladder and some enters small bowel from common bile duct. Cholecystokinin is a natural hormone slowly injected intravenously to stimulate gall bladder contraction. Normal function has at least 50% ...Read more

Will getting a HIDA scan without CCK still measure the complete function of my gallbladder? What's the difference?

Will getting a HIDA scan without CCK still measure the complete function of my gallbladder? What's the difference?

Need gb challenge: CCK availability has been scarce recently. Certain fatty meals have been compared to CCK and validated in literature. You do need a challenge; I use Boost kids essential formula as a fatty meal substitute in my pediatric patientsi There probably is adult substitute. This allows evauation of contraction of gall bladder which helps diagnose dyskinesia and chronic gall bladder disease ...Read more

Is hida scan a very common procedure?

HIDA scan is easy: Hida scan is a common test by nuclear medicine. Hida is injected into blood, then is taken up by your liver & excreted into the bile ducts. If your gallbladder functions (is not sick), it will "light up" when it concentrates the hida material. Giving cck then allows measurement of gallbladder emptying time, patency of the bile ducts, & how effectively the hida material enters your small bowel. ...Read more

Can you tell me what is expected during a hida scan?

Can you tell me what is expected during a hida scan?

HIDA: Hida scan involves IV injection of a tc tracer. The tracer doesn't cause any side effects. Physicians look to be sure that the gallbladder and bowel fill with tracer to rule out cystic duct (cholecystitis) or common bile duct obstruction. Hida is performed with or without cck. Cck is helpful for chronic conditions to determine a gallbladder ejection fraction. Cck may cause cramping or pain. ...Read more

Can you tell me the things can be seen by doing hida scan ?

Can you tell me the things can be seen by doing hida scan ?

Many things: Liver function, bile ducts, gall bladder, and bowel.Hida mimics bile excretion in body.Obstructions to duct of gall bladder, main bile duct, spasm of sphincter where bile duct enters duodenum.Cystic dilatations or outpouchings of common bile duct called choledochal cysts. In infants, lack of bile ducts or biliary atresia. Sometimes bowel obstruction or malrotation.Duodenogastric reflux/bile gastritis. ...Read more

Need a simple explaination for this. What happens when you get a hida scan?

Need a simple explaination for this. What happens when you get a hida scan?

Gall bladder test: The patient is injected intravenously with tc99m hida (radiotracer). The liver extracts the material from blood stream and excretes it into bile ducts, gall bladder, and bowel.(30-60 min imaging) usually when gall bladder is full, patient is injected IV with cck (hormone to contract gb)patient may experience some pain, and calculate % of gb emptying(60 min. Imaging) normal usually > 35% in adults. ...Read more

Hida scan safe if you have pancreatitis?

Yes: Hida scan is a method to look at the ability of the liver to excrete a radioactive dye - a nuclear medicine study. It may tell if there is blockage of bile coming out of the liver or if the gallbladder is not working. Since it does not involve instrumentation of the pancreas, it does not worsen pancreatitis. It does have limitations, cannot be used if the bilirubin is elevated and not specific. ...Read more
