My 2 yr old woke up and has swollen, red, warm upper ear lobes. Doesn't seem to hurt. Any ideas on a cause and a treatment?

Possibly allergy: Since the redness and swelling involve both ear lobes, infection or cellulitis is less likely, unless there is reason to think otherwise. Is a red ear an indication of an ear infection?

Is a red ear an indication of an ear infection?

Where's the red?: The majority of ear infections children get will involve the middle ear. A doctor has to use an otoscope to diagnose them. The ear drum will be red and bulging with fluid behind it. The ear canal can also become infected, but still requires an otoscope to view. My 2 year old son has intermittent bilateral bright red ear lobes that are very hot to the touch. Should I be concerned? A neighbor suggested htn?

Vasodilation: I do not know of any correlation between bright red ear lobes and hypertension. Can politics stop civilian ent's say surgery needed for mastotiditis & tore ear drum. Civ dr's refuse treatment when thy find out va caused it apr 201?

Gets complicated...: In general, the U.S. Is a free country, so a patient can select any doctor he wants to go to, and likewise, a doctor can select which patient he wants to treat. That makes life fair. Red doesn't diagnose: Red is but one thing we look at when visualizing an ear drum. Red alone does not an ear infection make. An ear drum can be red if child has fever, is crying, holding breath, etc. We also look at landmarks, how the light reflexes, whether the ear drum moves, whether there is fluid behind the drum. All the things together make the diagnosis. If you are concerned, best to have doc look to diagnose. ...Read more
