What is the best treatment for psoriasis on my scalp? It affects my face as well. Are there any foods I should be avoiding?
Below: Best advice is to see a Dermatologist for exam and treatment
Depends: It depends on the severity and how responsive it is to treatment. Psoriasis is a disease where the body attacks its own wrapper from within. For some folks, all it takes is some topical medicines and maybe steroids. Other folks require more powerful medications that turn down the immune system. You need to work with your doc to decide what works best in your case.
Cutis aplasia: A skin defect is occasionally found on the scalp of newborns & may be finger tip sized or as big as a grapefruit in diameter. The small defects usually gradually become smaller with age & simple cleaning & coverage with antibiotic ointment will prevent complications. What's the best, safest and most efficient biological treatment for scalp psoriasis? Thanks much!
Many options: There are quite a few options out there. It would start with a good combination of scalp shampoos - I usually have my patients alternate 2 or even 3 types. Depending how extensive the scalp psoriasis is, steroid impregnated topicals with or without a vitamin d analog can be helpful. You need to see your dermatologist for an individualized treatment plan. There is hope!
Griseofulvin: Tinea is a fungus, and when it occurs on the scalp it is actually called tinea capitus. Tinea corporis, on the body, is called ringworm, because it causes a ring-like rash. Fungus on the scalp is harder to treat than on the body. Rinworm responds to creams, like lamisil, (terbinafine) for about 2 weeks, but the scalp requires an oral medicine, like griseofulvin, and for a longer period of time (6-12 weeks).
Itchy scalp: Lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, avocado oil and german chamomile oil are excellent natural home remedies for itchy scalp. Mix these oils in equal proportions and, add some water and finally apply the resultant mixture to heal itchy scalp in a natural way.
Tea tree oil: Pt depends on the form of tea tree oil and how dry or oily your skin is. You can apply after shampoo and leave it. Or, prior to shampoo leave on for 5-10 min and wash out.
Anti-fungals: Ringworm is actually a fungal infection (not a worm) of the skin. You can treat it with over the counter antifungals such as Clotrimazole cream (and there are many others). Clean the area, dry it and then apply the cream several times per day. If it persists longer than about 2 weeks, you might want to see a dermatologist for alternative applications.
