What is the best treatment for dry, sandy feeling eyes? My eyes seem worse in the summer.

What is the best treatment for dry, sandy feeling eyes? My eyes seem worse in the summer.

Dry: Dry eye is a common medical condition that results from an inadequate tear film. The normal tear film constantly coats the surface of the eye with moisture. This moisture is needed for good vision and eye health. In dry eye, the tear film evaporates easily and allows dry areas to develop on the eye surface. This will cause red and sandy feeling eyes. Other common symptoms of dry eye are blurred vision, and watering eyes from the irritation. Fortunately, dry eye has many treatment options. Over-the-counter lubricating drops, also called artificial tears, will often help. For best effect, artificial tears should be used at least three times daily. There are many different brands of artificial tears, and it is best to try a few different brands to see which gives the most relief. Some patients also benefit from oral omega 3 fatty acid supplements, e.g., fish oil or flaxseed oil. To ensure proper diagnosis, see your ophthalmologist who can also offer more advanced dry eye treatment, if needed. ...Read more

My mother had an accident and broke five ribs, what is the best treatment for a full recovery? And how many time does it take to get better?

My mother had an accident and broke five ribs, what is the best treatment for a full recovery? And how many time does it take to get better?

Takes time: Rib fractures will heal on their own over time, but they are painful. She needs to be encouraged to ambulate and to try to breathe as normally as she can. Pain meds such as Ibuprofen will make it less painful for her to breath deeply. You didn't say how old your mother is, but you want to encourage her to try to stay active. She must avoid developing pneumonia. ...Read more

I cannot open my mouth more than thumbs width. It's been like this for about a week. What is the best course of treatment to regain full use of my mouth?

Splint therapy: See an orthodontist who is proficient in TMJ problems. A splint is probably warranted along with range of motion exercises. Moist heat to the area in front of the ears will help loosen the tissues as well. It sounds like the disc has been dislocated and is swollen preventing you from translating your condyles. ...Read more

Seek endocrinology: Managing pituitary adenoma and hyperpralactinemia is best managed by a specialist who has a chance to exam you, get a good history and order/interpret proper lab tests and imagining. It's unfortunately beyond the scope of this forum. Sorry. ...Read more

Rectal prolapse: If mild - it can be gently reduced and pushed back in - use a moist washcloth. Stool softeners may help prevent reoccurence. I just found out my grandmother has rectal cancer. Is it cureable? Can she get rid of it? Not real familiar with it. What is the best treatment?

Depends on stage: I need more information to answer your question. Rectal cancer that is early and has not spread is often curable. The treatment is surgical resection often preceded by radiation therapy. Chemotherapy may be necessary as well, depending upon the stage of the cancer. The important thing is to be sure she is in the hands of a good surgeon and medical and radiation oncology medical specialists. ...Read more

Ask human resources: The human resources department of the employer (or the "boss" if it's a small business) may offer several insurance plans. If only one is offered, then the employee has no other choice. If more than one is offered, then the employee can search online to see which physical therapy clinics are "in network" (contracted by the insurer to provide care). The second most important thing is the cost. ...Read more
