What is the definition or description of: Bulging fontanel?

What is the definition or description of: Bulging fontanel?

Increased Pressure: A bulging fontanelle (soft spot on baby's head) is most likely due to increased intracranial pressure. This may be due to a number of factors, including head bleeds, an intracranial mass, or a defect in cerebral spinal fluid production/flow. It is a "safety valve" for babies, and it lets physicians know that a work-up needs to be performed quickly to determine the cause.

Soft Spot On Top Of Head (Definition)

In an infant, the space where two skull-bone sutures join forms a membrane-covered "soft spot" called a fontanel (fontanelle). The fontanels allow for growth of the skull during an infant's first year. The fontanels should feel firm and very slightly curved inward to the touch. A tense or bulging fontanel occurs when fluid builds up in the skull cavity or when pressure increases in the brain (increased intracranial pressure). When the infant is crying, lying down, or vomiting, the fontanels may look like they are slightly bulging, but they should return to normal when the infant is in ...Read more

Does the presence of a bulging fontanel (soft spot) mean that my baby has meningitis?

Possibly, but...: A bulging fontanel is associated with meningitis. But babies with meningitis have other issues, which may include fevers, poor feeding, lethargy. And bulging fontanel is not only caused by meningitis either. Please see your child's pediatrician if you are concerned.

Depends: A bulging fontanel can be normal depending on the position the child is in when it is evaluated. A crying child who is lying down will almost always have a bulging fontanel. A bulge indicates an increase in pressure - either in the skull itself, or within the superior sagittal sinus (the giant vein which lies just beneath the fontanel). A spinal tap is warranted to check the intracranial pressure.

What is the best treatment for delayed closure of anterior fontanel soft spot?

What is the best treatment for delayed closure of anterior fontanel soft spot?

Patience: Most kids will have what feels to be closure of the anterior fontanel by 15-18 mo but some may persist. The separation between the bones will persist to some degree until about 9 when kids reach their adult head size. In examining thousands of kids over 3 decades, I never found one that didn't eventually close.

What is the best treatment for bulging discs?

What is the best treatment for bulging discs?

Depends on pain: Depending on pain levels and individual results will vary. If no pain there is no specific treatment that will reverse a bulging disc. It is best to not use tobacco, to stay fit and keep your abdominal and back muscles strong. Medications like antiinflammatories and muscle relaxers are often helpful when causing pain. If there is severe enough pain, an epidural injection may help.

What is the best treatment for a bulging disk in your neck?

What is the best treatment for a bulging disk in your neck?

See below: The first step is to see a doctor who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of these conditions. Believe it or not, many people have bulging discs and do not have any symptoms. A specialist in this area could help determine if this bulging disc is in fact the cause of symptoms and if so can usually prescribe a therapy program which should help.

Integrative care: A herniated disc can cause back pain as well as foot pain by physically pressing on the nerves that travel to the foot and by irritating them through the extrusion of pro-inflammatory disc materials. Physical therapy and other conservative measures, including medication management, are considered first line treatment. If these fail, your physician may recommend epidural steroid injections.

Small bulges: Are common incidental findings, and may require no treatment. Best to be evaluated by a neurosurgeon or orthopedic spine surgeon to determine whether or not the bulges could be causing your symptoms, and go from there.

Prolotherapy, prolozone, or platelet rich plasma during physical therapy? Which best odds for mild but troublesome bulging cervical disc?

Get another opinion: As a mild bulging disc in your neck is not the issue nor are the treatments your are mentioning other than some short term pt. Time is the best healer as is the judicious use of some medications and other possible pain management techniques but get an opinion from an orthopedic spine surgeon or neurosurgeon first.

What are permanent treatment options for lumbar disc diseases, like disc dehydration, bulging, and tear?

Sorry!: At this time, nothing will reverse these processes. Some of this is genetic and some is aging. Your best approach is to stay active, exercise regularly, get your rest, avoid unhealthy habits (smoking, over-eating).

If I request a microdiscectomy as oppose to conservative treatment for a lumbar bulging disc what are the pros and cons?

If I request a microdiscectomy as oppose to conservative treatment for a lumbar bulging disc what are the pros and cons?

Microdiscectomy: There are always inherent risks of surgery (infection, nerve damage, spinal fluid leak, anesthesia risks including heart/lung problems, blood clots, stroke, even death). Although rare, all of these can happen with surgery. Herniated/bulging discs have a good chance of resolving without surgery within 6-8 weeks from onset of symptoms with conservative management
