Anorectic agents generally known as diet pills are medications which decrease or inhibit appetite and aid in the reduction of food intake, therefore aiding weightmloss. Most currently FDA-approved appetite medications are dispensed by prescription due to potential side effects and contraindications. Diet pills alone are seldom successful in deriving long-term weight reduction. They should only be taken under the direct supervision of a physician specifically trained in their use as a part of a multi-modal treatment program including diet, exercise, ...Read more
Caffeine weight loss: I don't recommend caffeine supplements for weight loss for my patients. At 45, you may have some degree of unrecognized elevated cholesterol, borderline diabetes, or high blood pressure. Some risks of large amounts of caffeine on the heart and other organs shouldn't be ignored. There is not, and likely will never be, a magic pill for weight loss. It takes a dedicated diet and exercise plan daily. ...Read more
No Magic Pill: I joke with my patients, "there's no magic pill." however, medications for weight control can be a helpful tool when used in the context of a bariatric weight control program. They have little value, and may actually cause weight gain when used alone. For some, they help with symptoms due to their effects on serotonin and norepinephrine receptors; which control mood, drive, motivation and hunger. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
What medication is good for suppressing appetite? Which medication is that helps for losing weight but it's side effect is insomnia ?
Appetite suppressant: Phentermine is often used but can cause insomnia. I prefer an older drug, Diethylpropion becauses it often helps patients on psychiatric meds loose weight. I am not impressed with Alli which caused an oil-slick in my pants during a conference one time. Topamax (topiramate) causes a feeling of fullness and an average of 23 pounds of weight loss. I don't have any experience with meridea. ...Read more
My choice: Under a doc's supervision, a well tolerated and generally safe one I use in my practice is Phentermine (adipex). Have your blood pressure (BP) checked before and during treatment as increase in bp, heart rate, insomnia, headache and nausea are common. It works by suppressing your appetite. You take it in the morning after breakfast. Expect roughly 8-10 lb wt loss over 3 months. ...Read more

None are effective: Over-the-counter diet pills decrease one's appetite a bit (they are related to stimulants). A person's desire to eat can be much stronger that a diet pill's power to decrease her appetite, so she will likely continue to eat too many calories. Also, diet pills don't increase one's desire to exercise. If something as simple as a diet pill actually worked, we would not have so much obesity in america. ...Read more
Lifestyle: Study after study shows that short-term diets are not effective in maintaining weight loss. What you need is lifestyle changes and eat in a healthy way from now on. Fewer carbohydrates and fats along with increased reliance on vegetables will be very helpful. Activity is also important so a regular exercise program is recommended. Make healthy lifestyle changes and avoid the yo-yo dieting. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Trivial: Hi. Metformin doesn't do squat for weight loss; it's weight neutral. There are FDA-approved drugs for weight loss, Qsymia & Belviq, (lorcaserin) which are far more effective than metformin (and far more expensive, unfortunately). There are type 2 diabetes drugs that help with weight loss too, although they're not approved solely for that purpose (GLP-1 agonists & SGLT-2 inhibitors). Good luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
