What is the difference between retinoic acid and retinol? Are they the same or almost the same?

Retinoic acid: Both compounds are in the "retinoid" family of drugs. However, they have very different properties. Retinol is not nearly as effective as retinoic acid for acne, facial wrinkling, etc. Retin-a is the most famous of the retinoic acid compounds, but equally effective and cheaper generic products are also available. ...Read more

Any doctors experienced with Accutane side effects? Or how to reverse effects of retinoic acid? Systemic.

Accutane: Your dermatologist will be experienced with Accutane side effects. Accutane, which is 13 cis retinoic acid, is the way that your body normally uses vitamin a. Vit a is fat soluble and is stored. When the body needs the vit a action, it converts some into 13 cis retinoic acid. This is water soluble and provides the vitamin a action and then is eliminated in the urine. ...Read more

I've been using a retinol cream for acne for about a month and its made acne worse. Is retinol bad for acne but retinoic acid good for acne?

Depends: Retinoic acid is good for an acne ( but it used in more severe cases). Sometimes just cleansing the skin with peroxide and antibiotic ointment afterwards can do the trick in not complicated cases or it can be added to your current medication in more severe cases. Check with your doc or consult a dermatologist. If your are a female, get an oral contraception (pills). ...Read more

Salicylic acid vs tretinoin/retin a, which is better?

Retin a (tretinoin) if moderate: If you have very mild acne then salicylic acid may be adequate. For more moderate or any cystic component of acne, retina a is "stronger" and will be more likely to help acne resolve completely. Keep in mind retin a (tretinoin) needs to be a "pea" sized amount applied daily, can cause peeling and redness of skin initially. if redness and irritation are a problem, back off to every other day application. ...Read more

Can I use kojic acid before putting retin a (tretinoin) in my face to make it lighter?

Can I use kojic acid before putting retin a (tretinoin) in my face to make it lighter?

Depends: Either alone may not irritate your face, but you may not be able to tolerate the combination. I would suggest that you try a spot under your chin for a few days to find out if it would be ok to use it on the rest of your face. Whether you get peeling and irritation also depends on the concentration of the products. ...Read more

I'm using alpha-h skin care. Contains aha and glycolic acid. If I start retin-a do I discontinue aha/glycolics? Can I use retin a (tretinoin) .5% once every week?

I'm using alpha-h skin care. Contains aha and glycolic acid. If I start retin-a do I discontinue aha/glycolics? Can I use retin a (tretinoin) .5% once every week?

Not both together: I recommend using one or the other and not both together, as both medications have a slight exfoliating action and are likely to cause more side effects if used together. To my knowlege, Retin A (tretinoin) comes as 0.05% and that is the stronger formulation. I suggest starting with 0.0125% or 0.025% first to see how your skin responds. ...Read more
