What Is Retinoic Acid
Retinoic acid: Both compounds are in the "retinoid" family of drugs. However, they have very different properties. Retinol is not nearly as effective as retinoic acid for acne, facial wrinkling, etc. Retin-a is the most famous of the retinoic acid compounds, but equally effective and cheaper generic products are also available. ...Read more

Tretinoin also has rejuvenative effects on the skin namely compacting the epidermis so skin looks and feels smoother, increasing collagen content so that skin has less fine lines and wrinkles, and minimizing brown spots to provide more even coloration. ...Read more

I've been using a retinol cream for acne for about a month and its made acne worse. Is retinol bad for acne but retinoic acid good for acne?
Depends: Retinoic acid is good for an acne ( but it used in more severe cases). Sometimes just cleansing the skin with peroxide and antibiotic ointment afterwards can do the trick in not complicated cases or it can be added to your current medication in more severe cases. Check with your doc or consult a dermatologist. If your are a female, get an oral contraception (pills). ...Read more
Retin a (tretinoin) if moderate: If you have very mild acne then salicylic acid may be adequate. For more moderate or any cystic component of acne, retina a is "stronger" and will be more likely to help acne resolve completely. Keep in mind retin a (tretinoin) needs to be a "pea" sized amount applied daily, can cause peeling and redness of skin initially. if redness and irritation are a problem, back off to every other day application. ...Read more

Depends: Either alone may not irritate your face, but you may not be able to tolerate the combination. Whether you get peeling and irritation also depends on the concentration of the products. ...Read more
I'm using alpha-h skin care. Contains aha and glycolic acid. If I start retin-a do I discontinue aha/glycolics? Can I use retin a (tretinoin) .5% once every week?
Not both together: I recommend using one or the other and not both together, as both medications have a slight exfoliating action and are likely to cause more side effects if used together. To my knowlege, Retin A (tretinoin) comes as 0.05% and that is the stronger formulation. I suggest starting with 0.0125% or 0.025% first to see how your skin responds. ...Read more
