What Is Prednisone Prescribed For
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more
Ask Prescribing Doc: It's always better to speak to the prescribing physician about how to take your medications. Different meds can be taken in different ways depending on the reason they were prescribed for. A phone call to the doctor's office should suffice but feel free to ask them any other questions about the medications. ...Read more

Prescribed prednisone at 60mg- 3 days, 40mg- 3 days, 20mg 3 days. Today is the first day at 20mg and already the pos effects are gone. Why so quickly?
Your level of....: Your level of inflammation must be high. The taper is fairly rapid as well. Taking an NSAID may help, but the co-use of another anti-inflammatory other than steroids, depending on diagnosis may help. Recently, I have been prescribed prednisone 20mg twice a day for 14 days. Are there any harmful side effects?
Why would my Dr. decline a refill on a previously prescribed 20mg dose of Prednisone for a recurring pinched nerve?
Recurrent radicular: I would never prescribed more than one course of steroids for an episode of radiculopathy. Even one course maybe too many. If does not resolve with rest, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy and epidural injection, then surgeryrecommended. Steroids only relief while taking them and infrequently give any long-term benefit while ensuring long-term harm. ...Read more
If I have local swelling, how long will it take for prednisone to start working, if at all? Prescribed 60mg/daily for 12 days.
Depends on cause: and diagnosis. If your question is that you have been taking Prednisone 60 mg for 12 days and still have swelling, I would have your doc re-evaluate you. If you have not started, then at 60 mg Prednisone IF it is going to work at all - should work relatively quickly- 1-2 days. Note you should probably taper OFF Prednisone at that dose for that long. ...Read more
