Creatine Kinase (Definition)

Creatine kinase is an enzyme found in muscles throughout the body. There are different subtypes of the enzyme, called isoforms, which predominate in different organs. For instance, the isoform in skeletal muscles is different from that which is most heavily found in the heart muscle. A blood tests detects levels of this in the body, for example if ...Read more

What causes CPK levels in the 5000 range and what problems would it cause?

What causes CPK levels in the 5000 range and what problems would it cause?

Lots of causes: Elevated CPK indicates muscle damage and can be resolving or ongoing. There are many causes of this, but the main issue is that it can lead to kidney failure since the muscle breakdown proteins aren't filtered well by the kidneys. Also, ongoing muscle damage can lead to compartment syndrome, a surgical emergency. ...Read more

My CPK level is 209 in the morning after Workout done for muscle training in the evening. Is it normal?

My CPK level is 209 in the morning after Workout done for muscle training in the evening. Is it normal?

It isn't that high: well.... if it were all coming from the heart muscle that would be bad....otherwise, that isn't a very high number. Many people who have big muscles always have that level. I've looked at hundreds of articles on exercise physiology and while literally muscle damage is considered by many a stimulant for muscle growth, haven't seen CPK's as predictive of growth. Not bad; can't say if actually good ...Read more

Normal white count and a high level of creatine kinase. What illness could this indicate?

Normal white count and a high level of creatine kinase. What illness could this indicate?

Maybe none: If you exercise, you ck can be very high -- many times the upper limit of normal. The normal range is for couch potatoes. I'm glad you asked, but no lab test means much in isolation. Best to ask your physician and see what matches with your symptoms and lifestyle. ...Read more

Is my level of creatine kinase, total, serum @143 good, range is 24-204?

Is my level of creatine kinase, total, serum @143 good, range is 24-204?

Yes and no: Creatine kinase is meaningful only if the number is way-high and there's reason to worry about rhabdomyolysis, heart attack, carrying muscular dystrophy, or a few others. Most folk who exercise heavily have creatine kinases above the "reference range", which is just the lab's number for most ordinary folks who aren't actually sick. Don't look at numbers; look at your health -- why not go run? ...Read more

Professional endurance athlete, trains 8+ hrs/day with b12, creatine kinase out of range high normally and gets sick very easily. Recently had epidura?

Normal: Sounds like a bit much of overtraining. Ck is normally elevated if high exercisers, esp if arican american. You seem to be overdoing it and even if u r a personal trainer, u need a coach. Hrs, md www.Thepmc.Org. ...Read more

Can magnesium levels be normal and still be deficient ? I have muscle spasms and twitches but normal emg/ncv normal CPK aldolase as well..

Yes and no: By definition if the levels are normal they should not be deficient. But, it is possible. Also, one should check not only magnesium serum levels but magnesium rbc levels. Still, there are many instances when normal levels are still causing cramping and supplementation helps...... ...Read more

Recovered from viral meningitis 2 mos ago, still feel achy/headache.Wbc, sed rate, cpk levels normal today, can meningitis be back even if blood is ok?

Probably not: A viral infection with meningitis certainly could make someone feel tired and achy for a couple of months. Without fever and worsening headache, it is unlikely you have recurrent meningitis. But this is obviously something for you to discuss with your doctor. Good luck! ...Read more
