Short term use: I generally recommend Mupirocin for mild, superficial infections that don't warrant the use of systemic antibiotics. I will also use it in the nostrils to reduce carriage of methicillin-resistant staph aureus (mrsa). Can i shower, while using mupirocin ointment, do i cover the affected area or is okay to get it wet?
OINTMENTS as a "VEHICLE" (carrying agent" are more resistant to the effects of water they can be washed off. I would "time" your showers at the end of the suggested time for application of the ointment (eg three time /day at the end of an 8 hour period!

Yes: however, need to watch it closely and if redness extends despite topical antibiotic, would recommend eval by physician.
