My husband has MRSA in his nose. He was in the hospital. He used the mupirocin ointment in his nose daily as prescribed. Is he contagious to others?
MRSA: Your husband is not likely to be "contagious" to others. In addition to mupirocin he should bathe with soap containing chlorhexidine only. ...Read more
Saw a doc for red, puffy, infected nostril. He prescribed Bactroban (mupirocin) ointment. Is this standard of care, or should I be taking oral antibiotic too?

The topical ointment soothes sore membranes and kills the Staph bacteria that is most commonly responsible for this problem. IF the symptoms don't improve after 5 days of treatment, then I usually will prescribe an oral antibiotic like Cefadroxil. I hope this helps. You can consult me if needed. ...Read more

You would certainly want to continue the antibiotics unless told otherwise, but perhaps your doctor could ensure the pathogen is susceptible to the chosen antibiotic. ...Read more
Short term use: I generally recommend Mupirocin for mild, superficial infections that don't warrant the use of systemic antibiotics. I will also use it in the nostrils to reduce carriage of methicillin-resistant staph aureus (mrsa). There may be some other cases where i would consider Mupirocin but i would have to think about that one. ...Read more
