You: could very well have a "stricture" of the ureter leading from that kidney and emptying in your bladder. Peritoneal fibrosis is another condition which can cause obstructive uropathy..(Overuse of certain pain medications have been implicated) Hope this helps! Dr Z ...Read more

Can you tell me about hydronephrosis of kidney and what are the consequences?

Can you tell me about hydronephrosis of kidney and what are the consequences?

Obstructed: Hydronephrosis of one or both kidneys means there is blockage or obstruction preventing the urine from flowing normally from the kidney to the bladder, and then out the urethra. There are many causes such as stones, tumors, scarring, etc. If blockage occurs below the bladder i.E an enlarged prostate in a male, both kidneys will be involved. If severe and chronic, can result in kidney failure. ...Read more

After having hydronephrosis in my right kidney it is only functioning at 25%. What is the percentage for saving a kidney, or removing it ?

After having hydronephrosis in my right kidney it is only functioning at 25%. What is the percentage for saving a kidney, or removing it ?

25% worth saving: Do you mean 25% relative function with opposite kidney performing 75% or is right kidney functioning at 25% of its' expected capacity? Below 10 - 12%, in presence of severe hydroneprosis is probably not worth saving. Ur young, thus my advice would be for you would likely be to undergo a laparoscopic or robot assisted pyeloplasty if hydronphrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction. ...Read more

How should infant hydronephrosis that was in one kidney and now both with much debris be treated?

If debris is present in the collecting system/s, then there are certainly concerns. If your child is a male, then there are potential concerns for bladder outlet obstruction as well. I had larascopic pyeloplasty right kidney march 2014 for puj obstruction.. It was a success but within 6 months I have hydronephrosis again. Why?

Maybe OK: You still may have some degree of dilation of the renal pelvis even after corrective surgery for UPJ obstruction depending upon how much dilation was present to start. The crucial piece of information is how well your kidney actually empties, usually defined by a test such as a Lasix (furosemide) renal scan/renogram. As long as the kidney empties with Lasix (furosemide) challenge, some dilation is not a problem. ...Read more

Consult urologist: Did you have corrective surgery? Non-surgical treatment of hydronephrosis does not work unless it was caused by a kidney stone which passed. You likely need a kidney ultrasound & Mag 3 nuclear renal scan & may require corrective pyeloplasty surgery. Good luck. ...Read more
