What Is Heterogeneous Ovarian Cyst
Been advised I have a 2x3x2 ovarian cyst heterogeneous in nature. What does heterogeneous in nature mean? What follow up do you suggest?
Means many things: Homogeneous means that the cysts would look like a clear "water balloon" on ultrasound which is filled with one type of substance(water). Heterogeneous means that the cyst is filled with many different types of tissue that is often not "clear" like water .Although the ovarian cysts are very small a repeat ultrasound or MD visit would be advisable in 6 months or sooner if there is pain. ...Read more
A cyst is a structure or mass that consists of a cellular lined sac. It is typically filled with fluid but may be filled with solid material. It can be congenital, traumatic, or acquired. They may develop nearly anywhere in the body and usually require complete excision for eradication or they are likely to recur. Fluid filled sacs that are not cellular lined ...Read more
Growing ovarian cyst: While I am NOT a gynecologist a "growing" mixed density ovarian cyst is of concern. A simple cyst - fluid filled is generally benign but a heterogenous cyst may represent something like an endometrioma - You don't list any symptoms but I would recommend that you see a gynecologist and consider having the cyst removed and analyzed to make sure its not something of concern. Good luck ...Read more
Very painful heterogeneous ovarian cyst growing and looking more 'solid'. Should I be concerned? Generally feel rubbish with it all too.
Seek Gyn oncologist: It is usually recommended that a complex ovarian lesion "looking more solid" be carefully evaluated and removed for pathological examination (exploratory laparotomy or laparoscopic surgery) to rule out a malignant ovarian tumor. Although the risk of cancer is relatively low, it would be best to seek a consultation from and the expertise of a Gyn oncologist. ...Read more

I had MRI done on hips finding mildly complex heterogeneous 3.9x3.4x3.8cm ovarian cyst with presence of moderate free fluid within pelvis how serious?
At your age,: this is most likely a benign hemorrhagic cyst, but it needs to be followed up with your gyn and probably follow up ultrasounds to see if it resolves. ...Read more
I recently had a MRI on my hips which shows mildly complex heterogeneous ovarian cyst and presence of free fluid within the pelvis How serious is this
Hard to say: It is hard to say since there are many different causes of these findings. The first thing recommended should be a pelvic ultrasound with doppler flow studies. The cyst can be a functional cyst with hemorragh (caused by the function of the ovary-ovulation),an endometrioma, a cystic teratoma or dermoid, or a cancer. The doppler flow will be increased if it is cancer. ...Read more
How to know if my ruptured bloody cyst was a functional ovarian cyst or endometriosis ? Is there a way to distinguish between both of them ?
Ultrasound: Ovarian cysts are best evaluated by transvaginal ultrasound. If you are young and have periods, most cysts are ok, though they may grow large and rupture and cause pain. If you have gone through menopause, ovarian cysts need to be followed more closely, since they may be cancer. Pelvic MRI is helpful in evaluating persistent cysts or cysts which may partially contain solid tissue. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Depends on factors: A simple cyst is very common and often detected on routine pelvic or ultrasound exam and might disappear by the next exam. The more complex ones need further evaluation so doctors can determine the significance of cysts based their size, structure, timing with regard to period and to menopause, etc. Because not all cysts are normal, i'll share this with specialists in onc for their perspective.. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
