I hv recurrent cold, cough and ear allergic infection. Hw many vitamin C 500mg pills per day is required for it?

Not needed but good: Well, it was never really required. It is beneficial though. Vitamin C concentrations in the plasma and leukocytes rapidly decline during infections and stress. Supplementation of vitamin C was found to improve components of the human immune system such as antimicrobial and natural killer cell activities, lymphocyte proliferation, chemotaxis, and delayed-type hypersensitivity. ...Read more

Time to see the doc: You are doing so much right! But a month-long productive cough suggests to me it is time to have a doctor listen to your lungs, check your sinuses, perhaps analyze the phlegm. Hang in there. ...Read more

Likely a cold: Controversy exists about vitC supplements for a cold. Taking the suggested amount (and not more) is safe. Warning signs that should prompt one to see a physician are sudden worsening of the throat pain, enlarging lymph nodes, persistent fever, any resultant breathing difficulty, sinus pressure after 14 days that is not improving, and suddenly getting worse after a period of improvement. ...Read more

I think that I aspirated vitamin C pill. Would I be coughing if it were in my lungs? Is it unlikely if I'm not coughing?

I think that I aspirated vitamin C pill. Would I be coughing if it were in my lungs? Is it unlikely if I'm not coughing?

Cough protects you: Aspirating happens quite commonly -I can't even count how many times I've taken a drink of water and it 'went down the wrong pipe'. The cough reflex is there to protect the lungs, and in ur case I would be almost certain ur body did what it was supposed to do -cough it OUT of the airways and back into the GI tract -oropharynx or esophagus. If cough persists, you have pain or other symptoms-see doc ...Read more

Is it okay to take 6 tablets of 500mg vitamin C per day if a person is ill?

Is it okay to take 6 tablets of 500mg vitamin C per day if a person is ill?

Why so much: There's no clear benefit to such high doses. In the end, this is a water-soluble vitamin so you're unlikely to run into problems, as you should pee most of the extra out. But, at least for men, high dose vitamin C has been shown to increase the risk of kidney stones. You're probably better of keeping the dose in the range of 1000mg or less to be safe. ...Read more
