Can you explain to me why high blood pressure can be dangerous to an individual?

The silent killer: Htn is the leading cause of strokes and end stage renal disease requiring dialysis. It is a leading cause of congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and heart attacks. The major reduction in the incidence of strokes since 1950 has been attributed to the more widespread use of effective anti-hypertensive drugs. Htn causes no symptoms for about 30 years when end organ damage begins to occur. ...Read more

Hypertension (Definition)

A blood pressure reading has two numbers: a systolic blood pressure and a diastolic blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure is the maximum pressure the blood exerts on the vessels when the heart is beating. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure the blood exerts on the vessels in between heartbeats. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, begins when the systolic blood pressure remains above 140 or when the diastolic blood pressure remains above 90. Hypertension can be a result of increased blood flow through vessels or increased resistance to ...Read more

Is a low pulse with high blood pressure dangerous for an elderly person?

Is a low pulse with high blood pressure dangerous for an elderly person?

Depends.: Low pulse rate associated with symptoms or below 50 without meds probably requires some investigation. The degree of BP elevation determines how "dangerous" it is. In elderly patients it is often reasonable to accept higher baseline bp's rather than to push medications. If i can get a BP down to 140/90 range without side effects in an 80 year old I am generally pleased. ...Read more

Is high blood pressure and fast pulse from anxiety dangerous?

Is high blood pressure and fast pulse from anxiety dangerous?

ReasonIsNot theIssue: High blood pressure is a behavior ; the more chronic, the more the rate of cardiovascular events ; decline in kidney function ↑es. It does not matter if people "think" they know the basis or not; same behavior. The impact of increased heart rates is less clear, though some (minority) "believe" we may have some unclear limit on available heart beats. Best strategy, .Confront the bases of the fears! ...Read more

What is considered high blood pressure for an old female?

What is considered high blood pressure for an old female?

Depends on how old: Optimal blood pressure is under 120/80. Risk for heart disease and stroke begins to rise at 115/75. The elderly are "allowed" a bit higher blood pressure because the arteries may be stiff and not tolerant of 'normal' blood pressure. However, if well tolerated, it's best to stay under 120/80 for life. Allowance in the elderly should be considered by your doctor based on your health. ...Read more

In order to be considered to have high blood pressure would all my readings be high? I have both normal and high readings through out the day

Optimal healthy=SBP: (sitting, resting, heart level) <120 mmHg (e.g.95 to 115 mmHg) & DBP <80 mmHg (typically ~40 mmHg lower). Which has greater correlation with problems over time? Overwhelmingly SBP. Even more so PP (Pulse Pressure=SBP-DBP difference). Of course, with any physical activity, anger, frustration (possibly fear), SBP rapidly goes up, but should return to healthy resting values within 10 minutes at most. ...Read more

What is considered high blood pressure in teens?

What is considered high blood pressure in teens?

Teen BP: Among adults, there are clear numerical guidelines for diagnosis, but this is not true for teenagers. This is mostly because teenagers do not have the same risks (such as a heart attack) as adults. As with adults, adolescents with BP levels greater than or equal to 120/80 mmHg should be considered prehypertensive. “Hypertension is defined as average SBP and/or DBP that is greater than or equal to the 95th percentile for sex, age, and height on three or more occasions”
“Prehypertension in children is defined as average SBP or DBP levels that are greater than or equal to the 90th percentile, but less than the 95th percentile” ...Read more

My brother is 16 years old with hypertension of 11.5/7.5 to 12.5/8.5..is it considered as high blood pressure?
Height:170cm

Hard to say: In this country and much of the world blood pressure is measured in mm of mercury and a common blood pressure in a 16 yo would be 110/70. Since you quote measurements in a system that has no meaning to me I cannot make a reasoned answer.
