Finding thyroid expert ? Reading tells me large percentage of thyroid/nodules removed are benign. Medical papers refer to finding needle in haystack.
Cancer < 5%: Thyroid nodules are very common, especially as we get older. You are correct, most thyroid nodules removed are benign. There is a small risk of cancer in most nodules, but the risk goes up with significant medically history, like family history of thyroid cancer or history of neck radiation. ...Read more

Yes, biopsy: If the report didn't say that this is a cyst, then you should get a fine needle biopsy. If negative, it can be followed with serial ultrasound as long as it is not causing problem swallowing or breathing now. If the mass grows on subsequent ultrasound, you can then re biopsy or just proceed with surgery. In any case, keep close eye on the mass, at least once/year with an ultrasound. ...Read more

How large do thyroid nodules look on ultrasound in order to raise suspicion for cancer? Does size matter?
Size matters: Size does matter. Thyroid nodules of less than 1 cm are usually insignificant. Among nodules of >1 cm, the likelihood of cancer increases with size, but even bigger nodules (3-4 cm) are usually benign. Best approach: US and fine needle aspiration should be done by someone experienced in interpretation, usually an Endocrinologist. If surgery needed, find an experienced thyroid surgeon. ...Read more

See endocrinologist: You did not mention if you had an overactive thyroid 3 years ago when given radioactive iodine. I assume your thyroid levels are normal now. Is a solid thyroid nodule considered hot or cold? I have a solid nodule but did not specify if it was hot or cold
In certain cases: Many thyroid nodules need to be surgically removed, while others will never require surgery. Each case is individualized and there are many gray areas. It is really difficult to give a meaningful response to that question in the absence of a history and physical examination. ...Read more
Depends on problem: 3 major categories of potential health issues caused by thyroid nodules: a) large size affecting swallowing, breathing, voice ; b) over active production of thyroid hormone (hyperthyroid) ; and c) ~5% of nodules are cancer. Methimazole and ptu (propylthiouracil) are pills that block thyroid hormone production, treating b) above. Radioactive i-131 can shrink/destroy nodule, treating a) and b). Need surgery for c). ...Read more
Complicated question: Most nodules are initially treated with a biopsy. Additional therapy, if any, will depend on the results of that biopsy and any other symptoms or signs associated with that nodule. In truth, the treatment for any thyroid nodule is very individualized and impossible to generalize further. ...Read more
Only occassionally: While almost all thyroid cancers are cold, so are most benign nodules. If the nodule is hot, it is extremely rare for it to be cancer. If it is cold and looks suspicious on an ultrasound performed or at least interpreted by a very experienced clinician, it should be biopsied to see if surgery is necessary. ...Read more
Depends on the cause: If a nodule is due to hashimoto's thyroiditis (inflammation caused by autoimmunity, where one's own immune system attacks one's proteins and tissues), then taking thyroid hormone pills can shrink it. If it's a tumor that's over-producing thyroid hormone, radioactive iodine can kill it, and make it smaller). Fluid-filled cysts can be drained with a needle, but may grow back. Cancer needs surgery. ...Read more
