What Is Considered A High Ggt Level
Big picture: Some people have a gene that causes elevated GGT in folks who are otherwise healthy. Occasionally I have to reassure employers that these people aren't secretly abusing alcohol, since GGT rises in drinkers before other enzymes do. If you drink some, your physician may want to repeat this after two weeks off all booze, and decide then whether to pursue a lone abnormal lab. ...Read more

Hi I was wondering my GGT LEVEL is 64U/L which is very high but I don't drink alcohol or take drugs what causes the elevation? Hep test negative
May just be you: That's high for the lab, I trust? About one person in 1000 always runs a way-high GGT. It's genetic. These folks get accused of being drunks. You're not. Sorry there was a misunderstanding. If everything else is okay, forget it. ...Read more

Sir which high enzyme levels indicate significant liver damage due to alcohol? GGT levels or SGPT or SGOT levels..
SGOT / SGPT: These are better markers for damage. SGPT 38, SGOT 28 are not concerning though they're higher than most young men's. Some men run a high GGT even if they don't drink and this shouldn't be taken as proving anything. If you're drinking daily, this might be a good time to cut way back -- who really needs to be doing this? ...Read more

What is the GGT level? There are many medications that can raise GGT. How much do you weight? Fatty liver is an other cause. If GGT is only minimally elevated and stable and there is good reason to take the medications that my be raising it, that may be okay. See this site for more info.

Liver enzymes: Sometimes this can be due to gallbladder problems/stones. It is common in women 20s-40s, especially if they are overweight. There is also fatty liver disease where your liver fails to process the dietary fats efficiently, common with obesity. Medication can be a cause, especially those metabolized by the liver. Infection and other inflammatory causes are possible. Your doctor can tell you more. ...Read more

Pregnant & had gallbladder attack month ago, all levels were high now ALT & AST, Bilirubin is normal. But GGT is 164 (was 202, then 185 after attack)?
I'm on carbamazepine (300 mg) for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia can it lead to elevated GGT level?
Not conclusive: First of all, a single blood test in isolation do not provide enough information to form any definitive conclusions. A number of tests must be performed to have any meaning. Carbamazepine may cause an elevated GGT level, but also NSAIDs OTC may. Talk to your treating physician to find out what the test could mean for you. Carbamazepine 300mg for TN is a very small dose. ...Read more

Let's talk about it: Ggt tends to rise in people who drink a lot of alcohol before other liver enzymes do. There's also a genetic trait that's not rare in which healthy people run an extremely high GGT throughout their lives, with other 'zymes normal. A couple of times a year, I have to write courtesy letters pointing this out to substance-abuse compliance people. ...Read more
May be normal 4u: Around 1 person in 1000 just runs a high ggt; it's hereditary. If everything else is okay including alk phos i'd ignore it unless your physician is concerned. these are liver enzymes with GGT being the most sensitive to anything that can effect the liver, from too much to drink to numerous viral infections, drug exposures to name a few. As an endocrinologist most elevations of liver enzymes are due to fatty liver. Would repeat your tests in a couple weeks - very likely back to normal. ...Read more

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, if you are on any medications, including herbals or over the counter, that may do it. If you are overweight, that could explain it too. Neither level is too high.

Can you give me suggestions on I had bloodwork performed at work and everything came back desirable except my GGT level. It was 181.?
GGT: This is markedly elevated GGT (reference values: 7-51 IU/L). Clinically, elevated GGT levels correlate well with alcohol abuse and alcoholic liver disease. Of course alcohol intake is not the only cause of elevated GGT: certain medications and other liver diseases can show GGT increase. Please, see your doctor and limit alcohol intake. ...Read more
