Hopefully nothing: Generally, you should not feel any changes within the first two weeks of taking an ssri. Sometimes people will get mild side effects like nausea, upset stomach, constipation/diarrhea, dry eyes/mouth. Rarely, there may be sexual side effects. Let you doctor know if any of these occur in a way that is intolerable. After two weeks (wks 2-6), you should start to feel benefits. ...Read more

3 weeks on 20 mg citalopram. Anxiety is significantly reduced, sleep is better but depression increased. Is this common until I get used to med?
Please call doc: Not usually. With relief from anxiety and good sleep during the first 3 weeks of treatment, a depressed person may become active enough to act on suicidal thoughts. Please contact your primary care doctor or psychiatrist right away if you are thinking or intending to hurt yourself or someone else. I am not sure what you mean by "worse". Do you mean a worsening of depressed sad mood? Call doctor. ...Read more
It can be: Citalopram and other antidepressants are sometimes used to treat the depression that occurs in bipolar disorder ("manic depression") -- but usually not without the patient also being on a mood stabilizer at the same time. What's the best depression medicine on the market my dr prescribed me celexa (citalopram) it makes me sleep I don't wanna wake up I've had 3 deaths in one year?
Talk Therapy!: While you search for a better antidepressant, definitely get involved in supportive talk therapy. The losses you've faced and your grief will not be resolved by drugs alone - they may not even be necessary. You need to work through your feelings which may be fairly normal and healthy. But, un-dealt with, they can fester leading to worse symptoms. Be picky, this therapist is one you need to trust. ...Read more

Hang in there: How long have you been on Celexa (citalopram) 10 mg? It usually takes about 4-6 weeks before you see consistent improvement in symptoms. That being said, your dose may need to be adjusted further during this initial period. I bad night terrors since I took celexa (citalopram) for depression, I've been off it since sept and they still happen. Is it because of celexa (citalopram)? Can I do anything?
"Night terrors"?: Actual night terrors happen in stage 4 sleep -- different from nightmares, which happen in rem. Celexa (citalopram) can definitely increase the number of rem episodes/night -- with vivid dreaming & nightmares. Ongoing nightmares after stopping Celexa (citalopram) can relate to the depression & anxiety still being present, possible alcohol or other substance use, etc. I'd suggest following up with a psychiatrist for help. ...Read more
Caution: Citalopram can treat depression. The issue is, that -- in patients who have bipolar disorder -- antidepressants like citalopram can increase the risk of switching from a depressed or normal mood to one that is manic. Often a mood stabilizer is added to prevent such a mood switch. So it is important to discuss this issue and how to deal with it in advance with your psychiatrist. ...Read more

When I don't take Citalopram 20 or Fluoxetine 20 I'm impatient most of time everyday. Is this sign of depression and whether I should continue it?
Depends on you: SRIs impart patience, some call it zombiism, so we can cope with the unnatural stressors of civilization. SRI's were originally meant to be used for 6 mos max as a bridge back to well being. Were you impatient before? If not then this is a withdrawal effect & the sooner you stop the better off you'll be. Until age 27 the brain has the ability to reverse alterations caused by drugs, after that??? ...Read more
Is it safe to take the dosage 40 mg celexa (citalopram) in combination with 300 mg Wellbutrin (bupropion) for depression or is this dosage too high?
It depends: If your psychiatrist has prescribed these dosages for you then my assumption would be there was a good reason for that. If you are tolerating the combination with minimal to no side effects and you are benefitting from it then this may be appropriate for you. Look out for side effects such as not being able to feel your emotions or increased agitation and irritability. Good luck! ...Read more

Possibly: Yes, you could have withdrawal symptoms by suddenly stopping celexa, (citalopram) and your depression symptoms could increase. Hoping you also have a psychiatrist, and can discuss this directly with him or her -- it seems a bad idea to cold-turkey an ssri.
