What are Bowel Loops? Small Bowel Loops, Large Bowel Loops, etc

Folds of the bowels: Your body has about 20 feet of small intestine (small bowel) and 5 feet of large intestine (large bowel). The intestines are folded and form loops to fit into the abdomen. Large bowel loop refers to the folds of the large intestine and small bowel loops refers to the folds of small intestine. This reference is usually made during xray or CT imaging done. ...Read more

What does "nonspecific bowel loop" mean? This was on my CT scan report

Bowel loop appears: Non specific — meaning it does not suggest 1 disease over another. Typically, sometimes bowel loop appearance suggests obstruction, or perhaps ileus.

In this case, the bowel loop appearance does not suggest a particular disease. This result needs to be placed into context with your symptoms and other medical problems. Please talk about this with your doctor. ...Read more

What is fluid filled dialted bowel loops and how it cause?

What is fluid filled dialted bowel loops and how it cause?

Obstruction : That radiologic finding is usually a result of a bowel obstruction, but can also be seen sometimes in severe diarrhea. When the bowel is blocked the secretions from your intestines and stomach cannot pass into the colon where the liquid is reabsorbed. This cause the fluid to fill the bowel and stretch it. ...Read more

If I had a small bowel obstruction with a closed loop and herniation in to the omentum, what is the likelyhood it could happen again?

Unlikely: If you had surgery, which I assume you did, the chances of a recuurent bowel obstruction are low but possible. It is very infrequent that people require multiple surgerires for recurrent bowel obstructions. ...Read more

What is a hepaticojejunostomy/roux en y loop with a bowel resection? What is the prognosis?

Hepaticojejunostomy: Hepaticojejunostomy is a procedure to drain bile from the liver into the intestines when the normal drainage (common bile duct) has to be removed or is blocked. The "roux-en-y loop" is the segment of bowel that is actually surgically connected to the bile duct. Prognosis depends on the disease process requiring the procedure. ...Read more

Is a clearly defined black loop in the mid-left bowel on abdominal X-ray significant if a previous X-ray five days earlier did not show the loop?

Not likely: What you are describing is just an air-filled loop of bowel. This is a normal finding and because the bowel contents move constantly, it is normal that this would change from day to day. ...Read more

What is a "prominent air-filled bowel loop"? I had an ultrasound done on my abdomen and these were my results. It's located in the left upper quadrant.

Likely normal thing: Ultrasound waves run very well through fluid and solid parts of the body and very poorly through air and bones.
The comment that you have posted likely indicates that pictures taken with the Ultrasound was not as good as you would expect due to prominent air filled bowel loop. ...Read more

Vom &diarrhoea 5/6 weeks. Rif pain, spasms, u/s shows mesenteric adenitis, distended bowel loops moderate fluid in rif. Is this anything more than m/a?

Not normal: It is not normal for anybody at any age to be sick for 5-6weeks. Ultrasound showing something. The patient needs an immediate intervention, that will start with IV fluid, keeping her stomach at rest, stop the vomiting, analyze the stool to find the reason for the diarrhea, work up the patient to find explanation for the ultrasound finding.mesenteric adenitis is a reaction to some infection where? ...Read more

Interpret CT: mild thickening of distal sigmoid & rectal wall w/o adjacent fatty stranding. Loops of mild distended sm bowel w/o clear transition zone?

Diverticulosis: And possibly prior episode of diverticulitis could present this way. So too does infected segment or inflammation. The mild dilated small bowel in the current context is not as much of concern as the condition of the colon. Best discuss these findings with your doctor to put them into a good clinical picture. My CT Scan shows I have mildly prominent air-filled loops in my small bowel. What does that mean?

My CT Scan shows I have mildly prominent air-filled loops in my small bowel. What does that mean?

It may or may not: Mean anything. What symptoms are you having? Why was the CT ordered? There is wide variability in the normal appearance of the small bowel with respect to diameter, air, and fluid. "Mildly prominent" is a description that is very non-specific and doesn't mean much. For example, it could be normal, or it could be early bowel obstruction. Clinical context is the key, so talk to your doc about it ...Read more

Ultrasound said I had a loop bowel but CT scan didn't show it up, I'm in content pain please help?

Yesterday I ate fruit loops for breakfast and I had green peas with my dinner. Today I had a bowel movement and it was part brown and part green.

Stool color: Stool color can vary for many reasons, including particular foods eaten, disease states, and medications. A change in stool color in the course of one stool is not unusual, and would only be concerning if you saw red or solid black stool. These could be signs of internal bleeding. If you're not sure, see your doctor to check. Good luck. ...Read more

Does fluid and stool filled loops in small bowel w abnormal gas pattern w no inflammation or obstruction a sign of ileus?

Does fluid and stool filled loops in small bowel w abnormal gas pattern w no inflammation or obstruction a sign of ileus?

Possibly: Ileus refers to disruption in normal propulsive activity of the GI tract. The bowel dilates with gas and stool and there is no evidence of bowel sounds when auscultating the abdomen. Present usage restricts the term to disruptions caused by the failure of peristalsis, rather than by mechanical obstruction usually induced by a parasympathetic response due to surgery, infection or medications ...Read more

Ctscan : ovoid water attenuation struture in luq located between small bowel loops and the splenic flexure. Any ideas? Worried, I see GI in 1 week

Plz See Surgeon: This sounds like a cyst within the mesentery of the intestine, yet, this is but one small piece of the puzzle: what size is it, is it causing compression of any adjacent organs, is it causing symptoms, etc. In general, we have 3 options: leave it alone, remove it, or stick a needle in it. This decision is best made with a surgeon rather than a GI doctor. ...Read more
