What Is A Spiromtetry Test
Had spirometry test today and it came out moderately severe obstruction. What does it mean? Is it bad?
How bad does it mean when spirometry results only show the number 300 ml (vital capacity)? What is the average normal value for spirometry test?
Depends on: The predicted normal lung function results are based on age, sex, ethnicity, gender, and height. Thus the normal value varies among individuals. You must have misread your vital capacity since no adult can live with a 300 ml vital capacity. Could it be 3, 000 ml? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Very but..: Asthma is an intermittent disease, thus a relatively normal lung function test on one occasion does not rule out asthma. However it should be abnormal when you have symptoms and the numbers (fev-1) often improves after bronchodilator . As with all tests, a doctor can only make a diagnosis after having obtained your history, performed a physical exam, and then interpret the lung function results. ...Read more
Maybe: Asthma occurs when people have excessive bronchospasm triggered by allergens, irritants, some medications or environmental exposures. Bronchospasm is typically acute and may not show up on spirometry if there has not been a recent trigger. In this case a methacholine challenge may be used to induce bronchospasm for diagnosis by spirometry. ...Read more

Restrictive change: Restrictive changes mean that you generally can get air in and out but just less (like your lungs are restricted... Like belly is restricted when your belt is too tight). Restrictive changes can be internal based on lung function (scarring, etc) or external factors (like scoliosis or abdominal obesity). ...Read more
I got my lungs checked by 3 spirometry breathing tests and a x-ray. All turned out to be just fine. Is these enough to say my lungs work fine?
Pretty much.: You've had some extensive testing and everything has come back normal. Rather a lot to have had done at your age. You self-report anxiety and difficulty breathing, but the tests you had should have picked up a physical cause for your symptoms. I almost hesitate to say this, but the only other test would be a diffusion capacity test. Mention it to your doctor if you wish ; follow their advice. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Can a regular spirometry test not big machine show what stage COPD is? I did the small one that u blow into a few times and was told stage 3 COPD ?
COPD: There are hand held spirometers that can make a diagnosis of COPD. For stage IIi you needs FEV1/FVC <0.7 and FEV1 between 30-50% so it can be made by the hand held spirometers. https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/copd/diagnosis http://www.aafp.org/afp/2008/0701/p87.html ...Read more
