Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

What is normal weight gain during pregnancy if overweight?

What is normal weight gain during pregnancy if overweight?

Depends: On how much you weigh, 25-30 would be average but some of my obese pts sometimes do not gain much at all 10-15 lbs which is fine as long as the baby is growing.

Normal growth: You state that your baby is growing normally and that this is being monitored by ultrasound. It does not appear there is a cause for concern

Why are there so many different patterns of weight gain in pregnant women?

Why are there so many different patterns of weight gain in pregnant women?

Genetics: Every woman is different so every pattern of weight gain (and every pregnancy) will be different. As a general rule of thumb, a normal weight woman should gain between 25-35 pounds while pregnant. This often comes as a spurt in the middle of the pregnancy. Overweight women should gain less and underweight women more. Good nutrition and exercise are recommended for all pregnant women.

How much weight gain during pregnancy is normal?

25-35 lbs: If u gain less as long as the baby is growing normally that is fine, if u gain more - that can lead to macrosomia so harder to push out and more chance of a c- section, diabetes, elevated BP and harder to lose after.

I'm 7 weeks along with my 3rd pregnancy. I am so hungry all the time and worried about weight gain. Any suggestions? Is this normal?

Weight gain: I would stick to the three square meals and healthy snacks. In the first trimester, a woman only needs about 200 extra calories above normal which amounts to about half a chicken breast. Pregnancy is not a time to eat excessively ! A woman starting out at normal weight should gain 25-30 lbs. if underweight, 30-35 lbs and overweight 20-22 lbs.

Take the test: If you want to know if you are pregnant, take a test. In today's world you do not need to wonder if you are pregnant or not based on symptoms. Pregnancy tests are available at any pharmacy and in minutes you will have your answer. They can detect a pregnancy 7-10 days after conception. The best time to take one is when you miss your period.

No weight gain or symptoms really other than sore breasts and gassy at eight weeks pregnant is that normal? Sometimes i don't even feel pregnant

No weight gain or symptoms really other than sore breasts and gassy at eight weeks pregnant is that normal? Sometimes i don't even feel pregnant

Normal: You are still early to notice much weight gain, a normal amount is 1 to 5 pounds in the first trimester. If you were to get morning sickness, it usually starts around week 6, but you are fortunate to not have it! you will have your first ultrasound between 10-13 weeks... That's coming up soon! congratulations!

Pregnancy Test: Although these symptoms could be consistent with pregnancy - they are not diagnostic for pregnancy. Therefore - a pregnancy test would be needed to know one way or the other if pregnant. Good luck.

Not normal: I would say it is definitely not normal. You may need to be checked. Some patients who have surgery get a lot of IV fluids and this can cause swelling and weight gain after surgery that the patient gradually urinates out after surgery. But an acdf is a relatively minor surgery, so it would be unusual to have gotten a lot of fluid. You should get a medical check up. Thank you for your question.

Is it normal to have breast growth at 21 been same size for years now grown dramatically im not pregnant? Not on birth control or had weight gain ?

Is it normal to have breast growth at 21 been same size for years now grown dramatically im not pregnant? Not on birth control or had weight gain ?

Breast growth: Breast growth depends on both genetic and environmental factors. It is normal for the breast to change size with age. The most dramatic changes are seen at puberty, pregnancy, menopause, with changes in weight and with certain medications. Growth that is asymmetrical or localized is the most concerning. Bilateral enlargement is usually normal, but dramatic changes are worth having checked out.

20w pregnant with no weight gain, frequent dizzy spells, shortness of breath, palpitation (normal eating). Baby measure normal on level 2 ultrasound at 19w. Do I need to worry about low weight gain?

Be watched closely: I've seen some women with little weight gain during pregnancy have perfectly healthy babies, but weight gain of about at least 25 pounds would typically be expected. Make sure your doctor monitors closely your fundal height growth, and probably also more ultrasounds that the typical pregnancy for closer monitoring of the fetal growth.

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and gained a significant amount of weight in my first trimester. However, my BMI was underweight (110lb at 5.7ft) before conceiving. Now my BMI is "normal". Does being underweight before make my extra weight gain ok?

Pregnant weight: Absolutely. Those with a pre-pregnancy BMI under 18.5 should gain 28–40 pounds. Normal-weight women (BMI, 18.5–24.9) should aim for 25–35. Overweight women (BMI, 25–29.9) should aim for 15–25. Obese women (BMI, 30 or more) should gain only 11–20. Govern a starting BMI of 17.2 I would expect you to gain 40 pounds.

Can PCOS be temporary? Years ago had acne, slight weight gain, hair on neck. Now, slim and no acne, had a normal pregnancy, reg periods. went away?

Can PCOS be temporary? Years ago had acne, slight weight gain, hair on neck. Now, slim and no acne, had a normal pregnancy, reg periods. went away?

Yes: PCOS is linked to insulin resistance, which is usually but not always caused by being overweight and worsened by being more overweight. There is a confusing, but beginning to be understood interplay between insulin, LH and FSH, as well as other hormones. When you lose weight and the insulin resistance improves and so does the PCOS. If resolved with diet/exercise you are doing great! Keep it up.

What is a good schedule of weight gain if I am pregnant with twins?

What is a good schedule of weight gain if I am pregnant with twins?

Focus on diet: I don't set any specific weight targets for my patients. Focus on eating a healthy diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, lean protein, hearty complex unprocessed carbohydrates, etc. If you have access to food, then eat healthy. Expect that you will likely gain more weight with twins than with one, but i don't think you should focus on the pounds. Focus on your nutrition instead.

What are the long term consequences of putting my twins on feeding tubes? They are 3.25 and 2.95 kg at 1 mo adjusted age; weight gain of 17-21 g/day.

They gaining weight : Pretty well- 2/3 oz. -1 oz./day is the target. Just make sure they're doing at least non-nutritive sucking on a nipple (yours or a nursery-made pacifier) so they don't develop an oral aversion. Your twins will be referred to the state's early intervention program to monitor their development. Fyi, dr. Is there any relationship between maternal weight gain during pregnancy and gestation period/duration for singletons? For twins?

Not consistantly: Too little weight gain or excessive weight gain could be associated with indications for early delivery (iugr, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, ect). There is no specific concrete direct relationship between pregnancy duration and maternal weight gain.
