Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

What are normal liver enzyme levels in a healthy individual?

What are normal liver enzyme levels in a healthy individual?

Liver tests: There are about eight or 10 tests which can be termed a "liver test". Each of them has different normal values. In addition, some of the normal values vary depending on which lab performs the test. Having said all that, a good approximation of all the liver test normal values can be found here: http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/liver-function-tests/basics/results /prc-20012602

What are normal ALT liver enzyme levels? Is ALT 54 high? Elevated levels due to pregnancy or having a cold maybe? (no drugs were taken for cold).

What are normal ALT liver enzyme levels? Is ALT 54 high? Elevated levels due to pregnancy or having a cold maybe? (no drugs were taken for cold).

40 IU or less: We'd rather see them below 40, and most folks run 1-20. A few beers will kick them upwards; running a marathon is likely to put you into "danger zone" -- a lab value means nothing except in context. Let's repeat that alt in a few weeks off alcohol & meds -- or whatever your physician thinks best.

Can I have a normal liver enzyme (e.G., alt) level and still have chronic hepatitis c?

Can I have a normal liver enzyme (e.G., alt) level and still have chronic hepatitis c?

Oh yes: Some patients with chronic hep c may have normal liver enzymes, or normal enzymes intermittently. Liver function tests (lfts) are not the marker of the disease, or success of treatment; viral load is. Inflammation, scarring is more closely related to viral load and immune response to it.

Can acute hepititis be a sign of liver disease even if liver enzyme levels go back to near-normal?

Can acute hepititis be a sign of liver disease even if liver enzyme levels go back to near-normal?

Depends on cause: Almost all people recover completely from hep a, about 80% recover fully from hep b, only about 20% recover fully from hep c. Other causes of hepatitis, such as cmv, mono are usually transient. Alcoholic hepatitis and non-alocholic steatohepatitis can lead to permanent damage, .

Is 1.6 mg/dl bilirubin level normal if all other liver enzyme are normal. No yellowness of skin. How to lower it?

Is 1.6 mg/dl bilirubin level normal if all other liver enzyme are normal. No yellowness of skin. How to lower it?

Need investigation: You may wish to repeat the test to make sure the result is correct. Bilirubin of 1.6 is elevated and it can be due to many causes, some harmless and others requiring treatment. You need to see your doctor to rule out conditions that may require treatment. See this site for more info. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003479.htm.

Can acute hepatitis be a sign of permanent liver disease even if liver enzyme levels go back to almost normal?

Acute hepatitis: Is a form of liver disease. Most people recover from acute viral hepatitis. Unfortunately some cases progress to chronic aggressive form of disease, which can lead to cirrhosis. So have your doctor keep an eye on you.

Elevated liver enzyme level ALT 54:is this that high to be concerned? What are normal levels? Can this be caused if u have a cold or are pregnant?

Yes: The cause may be something as simple as being a bit allergic to your cold medicine. Your physician's next step is for you to repeat the level off alcohol and meds. If it's still up, a search for one of the dangerous-but-treatable causes (wilson's, hepatitis, iron-overload, a few others) may begin.

If my levels of bilirubin and urobilinogen in urine is normal, does this indicate a healthy liver? I'm having routine liver enzyme tests and nervous.

If my levels of bilirubin and urobilinogen in urine is normal, does this indicate a healthy liver? I'm having routine liver enzyme tests and nervous.

Liver enzymes: While it is encouraging that these urinary tests are normal, they are not enough to ensure that your liver is healthy by themselves. If your doctor recommended routine screening tests of your liver, the blood tests are the only way to go. I would not worry; the vast majority of the people having a routine screening have completely normal liver tests. Good luck.

How long does it take for liver enzyme levels to go back to normal after taking 1 dose of azithromycin (4x250mg)?

How long does it take for liver enzyme levels to go back to normal after taking 1 dose of azithromycin (4x250mg)?

Need Further Work-Up: It is very rare, for Azithromycin to cause liver problems, but it has been reported. Given its long 1/2 life (it stays in your system a long time), if you are one of these rare cases it could be a while. That said it is rare and an eval for other reasons for the abnl LFTs is needed, especially since the dose you took is usually for STDs and some of these also cause abn LFT's. Need a full work up.

How do I lower liver enzyme levels?

How do I lower liver enzyme levels?

What is the cause?: The treatment will depend on the cause. Liver enzymes can be elevated in a case of acute hepatitis , in hepatitis c ( acute and chronic), in drug overdose (tylenol, alchol etc) , drug related ( some statin /cholesterol medication, chemotherapy etc); red blood cell destruction ( hemolysis ) ;liver failure etc. You need to know why , before you can do something about it. Talk to your doctor in detail.

What happens when your liver enzyme levels are above 40?

What happens when your liver enzyme levels are above 40?

Liver damage: Persistent elevation of liver enzymes (ast, alt) is indicative of liver cell damage. The causes are multiple.

Is there a medication I could take to lower my liver enzyme levels?

Is there a medication I could take to lower my liver enzyme levels?

You need: To find out the cause of the enzyme elevation. There are treatments if it is a virus, and youshould steer clear of alcohol if that is a potential cause and until one is found, but many medications can cause the "trans-aminitis". No heal-all for this serious finding need to see an internist/hepatologist.

If one liver enzyme is normal, and 1 is evidently "slightly" elevated.. Is there any health concern?

Probably not: Not all people with a single, isolated, mildly elevated liver enzyme value have underlying liver disease, nor do they require an extensive evaluation. Just follow up.

I have elevated liver enzyme levels and was on Dioycycline for 5 months (from Nov. 2016 - March, 2017). They have come down but are still high. Do y?

I have elevated liver enzyme levels and was on Dioycycline for 5 months (from Nov. 2016 - March, 2017). They have come down but are still high. Do y?

Give us the results: If you can send us the present results of your liver Function tests(LFTs) we can be more helpful to you. Most often the liver enzymes will normalize if the offending agent has been removed from your body.

Could cirrhosis show in my liver enzyme level?

Could cirrhosis show in my liver enzyme level?

Maybe: If the cause isn't active -- for example, a cirrhotic who has an alcoholic past but is now abstinent -- the liver enzymes may be normal. Usually at least one liver function test is abnormal in a cirrhotic or precirrhotic.

What natural therapies can reduce my elevated liver enzyme ALT (sgpt) level?

Don't mess w/ liver: There are 2 kinds of liver enzyme abnormalities--that signal disease of the liver cells or of the bile ducts.Abnormal liver tests may reflect fatty liver, too much alcohol, toxic exposure, occupational exposures, lot's of viral infections, metabolic problems, familial liver diseases, problems with gallbladder, bile ducts, & pancreas. What are you treating with "natural therapy"? Best to find out!

My liver enzyme level is elevated and I am scheduled for an ultrasound. Should I be concerned?

My liver enzyme level is elevated and I am scheduled for an ultrasound. Should I be concerned?

Not specifically: It is very good that you ate following up on your blood tests. I do not know which blood tests are elevated. An ultrasound can look at both your liver and gallbladder. Sometimes blood tests to check for hepatitis exposure is indicated. Some medications can also affect the liver & your doctor may change them if indicated. Not to worry about, but good to have checked.
