The blood sugar concentration or blood glucose level is the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the blood of a human or animal. The body naturally tightly regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic homeostasis. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body's cells, and blood lipids (in the form of fats and oils) are primarily ...Read more
Is a blood sugar reading of 115 three hours after dinner considered normal for a non-diabetic person or is it something to be concerned about?
I'm a type II diabetic age 64 male. Just took my blood sugar reading after dinner 30 to 45 minutes ago. Reading = 96. Is that a normal reading?
Not diabetic. Checked blood in morning. Ranges are 78-90. Is it normal for my blood sugar reading to not raise very much? Sometimes goes down right after a meal. Will it keep going down? Or balance.
Im a type 2 diabetic my blood sugar reading has been in the 22.3-24.4 range, what symptoms should i watch for?
No absolute value: Hi. That's an overly simplistic question. I must assume (hate to do that) that we're talking type 2 here. It depends on what other diabetes medications the patient is on. Often other non-insulin meds can be used before insulin. Nothing is more effective than insulin at bringing sugar down, but other drugs may be perfectly adequate without the risk of hypoglycemia that comes with insulin. Good luck ...Read more
May do: The effect on blood glucose seems to vary from person to person. It is not a medication that we would normally avoid in diabetics. In fact it is the first line (most strongly recommended) treatment for nerve-related damage in diabetes. If you are finding your sugars are higher than expected you should review it with your prescribing Dr. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Not all blood sugar: A coma does not result as much from the sugar, as the other metabolic changes. With typical type 1, lack of Insulin gives ketoacidosis. Coma is from acidosis, dehydration, etc and the glu may not be extreme (eg 400). A type 2 may get hyperosmolar coma, where glu is very high, but dehydration and electrolyte abnormality is the biggest problem. ...Read more
Non-diabetic with a blood sugar reading of 234 about half-hour after eating candyshould I be scared?
No need to be scared: However, your bs did exceed the threshold of what we consider abnormal and may represent the early stages of beta cell dysfunction in the pancreas/ diabetes. I advise you to start adopting a healthier life style that includes stress reduction and best if you proceed with an endocrine evaluation as early intervention can make a huge difference. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I'm 24, moody and a non-insulin diabetic. My blood sugar reading doesn't come below 230 after eating. What can I do?
Diabetic specialist: Diabetes is a very difficult illness to treat because it requires u to take care of it every day. I would recommend seeing a diabetic educator and/or reconsult your doc for further evaluation, or even seeing an endocrinologist. Continuous glucose monitoring is available and Insulin pump can help reduce #of shots etc. There are many options now--where there is a will, there is a way. You can do it! ...Read more
What is a normal blood sugar level for a 46 yr. Old male. And is 300-400 too high? Never been diagnosed with diabetes.
80 - 120: The hope is to keep the blood sugar within the normal range in persons with type 2 diabetes. *0-90 up to 120-130 is usually an acceptable range. A normal hemoglobin a1c which measures what the blood sugar has averaged over the last 10-12 weeks is also a good measure of blood sugar stability. Ideally the hemoglobin a1c should be under 7=7.5. Your doctor, however, depending on your medications, diet. ...Read more
What is a normal blood sugar after a meal? #nqlu my boyfriend is a diabetic and had a 177 blood sugar level after our meal. Mine was 157. Is that normail?
The : The most important point to stress here is when the blood sugar is taken after a meal. Two hours after a meal is a true measure of how well your body is allowing the sugar you consumed to be taken up by the cells( role of insulin). If you take it around an hour after, that is merely an indication of how much sugar you ingested at the meal and does not really tell us much. Therefore the two hour is what will give you useful information. If your boyfriend has well controlled diabetes, then his blood sugar should be 140 or less after two hours. If a non-diabetic such as yourself has a blood sugar greater than or equal to about 140 after two hours then you may have an issue with processing sugar, and will need to see your doctor for diabetes testing. There is no established normal range that we use for non-diabetics at two hours, but most doctors use the 140 cutoff. Please remember the two hour blood sugar test is the most useful. Please see your doctor if you have any further questions or concerns. All the best. ...Read more
