Ferritin (Definition)

Ferritin is protein complex that binds iron and controls iron levels inside all of our cells. Low levels in the serum is a useful marker of iron deficiency. Macrophages are cells that contain large amounts of ferritin, and this that helps them scavenge RBC at sites of old hemorrhage. High serum ferritin levels occurs from macrophage activation and is a ...Read more

Can you overdose on iron supplements when you have low ferritin? What is the optimal dose of iron to take to raise ferritin significantly?

Can you overdose on iron supplements when you have low ferritin? What is the optimal dose of iron to take to raise ferritin significantly?

No: The gut is very inefficient at absorbing iron. So you really cannot take too much. Oral replacement takes several weeks. In a more pressing circumstance your doc could offer IV iron.

Been taking iron supplements for 3 months, hb now 15.6 so told to stop supplement, but ferritin still only 16. How can I build up my ferritin level?

Iron: Ferritin of 16 indicates that you still have iron deficiency. In iron deficiency the hemoglobin will be corrected first before the ferritin reaches the normal level. So, tecnhically speaking, you still need to take your oral iron supplement until your ferritin is normalized (above 50) also increase intake of iron rich food. Open this site www. Ironrichfood. My ferritin is low, 15 ng/ml. Should I take iron supplements? How much, how often, and what type?

Find cause: Iron deficiency in a man is stomach or colon cancer, or a stomach ulcer, until proved otherwise. You may also have low iron from chronic inflammation from your psoriatic arthritis. It's actually even more complicated. Your physician should have told you this already.

Ferritin level came back 23 ug/l. Reference range says 10-291 ug/l. Should I take some iron supplements?

Iron: You are at child bearing age- I would recommend you to take prenatal multivitamin with iron in it. If you have heavy periods and your hemoglobin is boderline - I would suggest you to take iron tablet once a day as well. But for sure, you should discuss this with your pmd.

Been taking iron supplements for a year and still no ferritin?

Been taking iron supplements for a year and still no ferritin?

Incomplete question: Your question can not be answered as it is incomplete. We need to know why you are taking iron supplement and what was your blood test and levels before starting the supplement and after taking it. We need iron level, ferritin levels, hemoglobin and rbcs level and the cause of iron deficiency, whether it is nutritional or from chronic blood loss or other causes and if it has been corrected or not.

Why could my ferritin be dropping after taking iron supplements for 6+ months?

Need actual values: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, Ferritin can be elevated due to tissue injury. It may be returning to normal. It would have been useful to have the actual results.

How long would it take for one's hemogoblin level to rise from 10 to 12 and ferritin level from 6 to 30 with the use of iron supplements (90mg) daily?

Iron deficiency: Since only 10 % or so of iron take b by mouth is absorbed, it may take weeks for the hgb to climb from 10to12. Often iron supplements are prescribed to be taken three times a day especially in menstruating women who are iron deficient and then the dose is reduced when the anemia is improved.

My ferritin level is very low at 9 and has not changed after 3 months of high dose oral iron supplements. Are iron suppositories more effective?

Not more effective: Your situation suggests inadequate nutrition. Despite a plentiful source of iron, your body is not producing protein needed to handle it.

Taking iron supplements, my ferritin is very low (5), my tranferrin and iron are normal. My TIBC and % transferrin saturation are high. Cause?

Taking iron supplements, my ferritin is very low (5), my tranferrin and iron are normal. My TIBC and % transferrin saturation are high. Cause?

Partially treated: Ferritin reflects body storage iron, while serum iron and transferrin saturation reflect current iron circulating in plasma. When you take oral iron supplement, the amount of iron in circulation (absorbed from gut on its way to storage sites) is transiently high. Your data suggest you have iron deficiency, partially treated, with blood tests taken within a day or two of your most recent iron pill.

Hey my ferritin level is 14.8 ng/ml. .. do I need to take iron supplements? I look pale and my MCV level is 84.4?

Very low ferritin: This is an abnormally low level. Ferritin reflects our body's iron stores. You need an immediate evaluation of why you're low iron stores are low. Are you bleeding into your gut? Do you have copious vaginal bleeding? You need an urgent medical evaluation to determine the cause. You can't treat chronic bleeding with iron pills. And yes, iron deficiency causes hair loss.

I have Polycythemia Vera and after my last phlebotomy my Ferritin level went down to 6. Is that severe? Should I take iron supplements?

That's fine: That's actually what you want, if you've really got polycythemia vera. Now I'm concerned about something. You say you're only 29. At your age, true polycythemia vera would be almost unheard-of. Is the diagnosis correct? Has it been demonstrated by today's molecular biology? It is possible that you have a high-affinity hemoglobin or a right-to-left shunt? Just wondering.

Do I need iron supplements if I have a blood ferritin level of 11.2? My regular iron levels are within range, but I'm often dizzy and sleepy.

Other data needed: Ferritin is the storage form of iron that makes sure you always have normal serum iron level as in your case. You need to look at your hemoglobin and glucose levels and several other parameters to explain your symptoms

Serrum ferritin is increasing but at a slow pace after taking iron supplements for 5 monts then why hair fall has started again when it stopped earier?

Serrum ferritin is increasing but at a slow pace after taking iron supplements for 5 monts then why hair fall has started again when it stopped earier?

Cause important: Simple iron deficiency should correct within 3 months of starting replacement. If there is no improvement or a slow response the cause of the iron deficiency matters. If there is ongoing blood loss the improvement will be delayed or absent. How you take iron matters--better absorption on empty stomach but maybe more side effects. Iron malabsorption is a rare possibility. Discuss with your doctor.

My ferritin blood level is 59 ug/l is this normal or could I have an iron deficiency? Do I need iron supplements?

Normal: Ferritin 59 can be normal, if you are not anemic it is ok. You should check CBC and can check iron, TIBC and fe-sat% to be sure.

Iron Supplements (Definition)

If so, you can usually break them in half and have one half with breakfast and the other with lunch. Drink a lot of water and eat foods that are high in fiber as iron can be constipating.
