I am o negative and had a miscarriage, but never went to the doctor or told anyone other than my husband. Now that I understand what it means to be Rh negative I am worried because I am 26 weeks pregnant. My doctor plans to give me the rhogam shot at 28 w

Please inform OB: You need to be up front with your OB in this matter so appropriate surveillance testing can be done during pregnancy. There is a possibility you were not sensitized during the first pregnancy but i wouldn't count on it. If testing shows the baby starting to have problems they can proceed with treatment. ...Read more

You need it soon: 85% of people have rh+ blood, so playing the laws of averages, there is a very strong likelihood that the father was rh+. There is always the chance that the baby would have been rh- and Rhogam wouldn't be necessary, but why take the chance. It's to prevent a problem with future pregnancies. ...Read more

I am rh- and after my miscarriage I did not recieve the rhogam shot, will I ever be able to carry a baby to term?

I am rh- and after my miscarriage I did not recieve the rhogam shot, will I ever be able to carry a baby to term?

Get tested: Only a small percentage of rh negative women will develop antibodies to the rh protein after a miscarriage. Ask your doctor or midwife to test you with an antibody screen to see if you have any antibodies. Even if you did develop antibodies the chances would be very good that your next pregnancy would be relatively normal. ...Read more

Unclear: It is not clear what is going here. If you took a pregnancy test right after a miscarriage then the test would still be positive to some degree. The doctor treating your miscarriage can clarify what happened and clear up the timing of the Rhogam shot. ...Read more

Had 2 miscarriages since my last rhogam shot think I may be preg again do I need the shot or is it too late?

Had 2 miscarriages since my last rhogam shot think I may be preg again do I need the shot or is it too late?

Probably not: You should be evaluated for the need for Rhogam anytime you bleed during a pregnancy. At this time, you need to have a test for Rh antibodies that is standard with your first OB labs. If it is negative, you would only need Rhogam in early pregnancy if you bleed. You would then get a Rhogam shot at about 28 weeks routinely. See your OB. ...Read more
