Blood Sugar (Definition)

1 hour after a meal and my blood sugar is 16.9 mmol is this bad???

Not normal: Hi. Finger stick capillary blood glucose is not approved for diagnosis. However, having said that, that's an awfully high blood glucose for 1 hour after a meal. I suggest you get a fasting SERUM glucose and an A1c at the least; a serum glucose 2 hours after a 75 gram oral glucose load is a good idea too. I bet you'll find multiple abnormalities. Eat healthily and exercise regularly. Control diabet ...Read more

The : The most important point to stress here is when the blood sugar is taken after a meal. Two hours after a meal is a true measure of how well your body is allowing the sugar you consumed to be taken up by the cells( role of insulin). If you take it around an hour after, that is merely an indication of how much sugar you ingested at the meal and does not really tell us much. Therefore the two hour is what will give you useful information. If your boyfriend has well controlled diabetes, then his blood sugar should be 140 or less after two hours. If a non-diabetic such as yourself has a blood sugar greater than or equal to about 140 after two hours then you may have an issue with processing sugar, and will need to see your doctor for diabetes testing. There is no established normal range that we use for non-diabetics at two hours, but most doctors use the 140 cutoff. Please remember the two hour blood sugar test is the most useful. Please see your doctor if you have any further questions or concerns. All the best. ...Read more

Is 124.2 mg/dl a normal blood sugar level for a 17 years old girl after a meal for after 3 hours ?

Probably normal: Hi. There aren't diagnostic criteria for normal sugar 3 hours after a mixed meal that I'm aware of, but I'd say that seems pretty much normal. Variables would be how much carb and fat were in the mixed meal; they influence how much and how quickly sugar will appear in the blood. If you're worried, talk with your doc about doing a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test. Good luck! ...Read more
