What If Im Severely Allergic To Penicillin
My wife is severely allergic to penicillin, I stopped my course 4 days ago. Is it ok for us to have sex?
Don't stop early: It's never a good idea to stop taking antibiotics early w/o physician telling you to do so. Stopping early increases risk for developing resistance such that bacteria learn to defend against that particular antibiotic eg penicillin, which won't work in future. Even if wife is severely allergic to penicillin, having sex while/after taking penicillin should not affect her, unless she ingests penicil ...Read more
Would the older or newer generation of cephalosporins antibiotics be more likely to cause anaphylaxis in patients severely allergic to penicillin?
See below: Persons with type 1 immediate hypersensity to penicillin antibiotics should generally avoid taking cephalosporin antibiotics because of the low but real risk of cross allergenicity. Safe alternative antibiotics include vancomycin, septra, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) macrolides, tetracyclines, aztreonam, clindamycin, zyvox, quinolones etc. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
My boyfriend just started taking penicillin for an infected tooth and I am severely allergic are there any precautions I should take?
Many: You need to avoid penicillin and amoxicillin plus a few related drugs but other antibiotics can usually be tolerated. Cephalosporin cross-sensitivity is possible (as much as 10%) but I have rarely seen one in my practice. The cross-sensitivity in the newer generations of cephalosporin is even rarer. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Anything not PCN ok.: Actually the incidence of a true IgE mediated reaction to Penicillin is less than 1% of the population at large. Thankfully there are many alternatives to penicillin for treating susceptible organisms. The big question that occurs almost always is can a penicillin allergic pt be given a cephalosporin . The true incidence of real crossover sensitivity to "cephalo's" is anywhere from 0.5% to 10% ...Read more
Be ready: People's reactions are usually (but not always) similar each time they take the same amount (dose) the same way (by mouth, injected, etc). You can use that as a guide to the kind of treatment you will need. If your reaction was severe, go the er, by ambulance if you have no one to drive you. Discuss with your doctor beforehand, not everyone who thinks they are allergic to penicillin actually is. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Varies: Some reactions are mild, such as hives alone. Others are more serious, with breathing problems and blood pressure drop. Some reactions (like some kinds of rashes) are not actually allergies, but different reactions that may or may not recur when you take the medicine. While it may be easier to just avoid penicillin, if it's important, you can find out if you have a "true" allergy by testing. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Malaria tablets: Potentially any. There isn't an association between penicillin allergy and allergy to any malaria medication, whether it is for prevention or treatment. The two antibiotics used for malaria are tetracycline and sulfonamides, but these are not related to penicillin and do not have cross-sensitivity to it. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Penicillin allergy: Up to 1/10 people are reported to have Penicillin allergy. Unfortunately it is often over diagnosed, often because of a rash from a viral illness. This underlies the importance of using antibiotics wisely. There is a family history but not enough to avoid the medication. Testing can be done to assess penicillin allergy and there is treatment to help. Chances are you have received Penicillin? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
You shouldn't: But it has nothing to do with penicillin allergy. The two drugs are totally unrelated, but mdma is a dangerous drug in kids, even more so in a 39 year old, who should of given up that kind of nonsense long ago. Many mdma pills are not pure, and may contain other related chemicals, some of which are even more dangerous than the ecstacy itself. Molly, a particular brand of mdma has caused deaths. ...Read more
Probably: It would be unlikely to develop an allergic reaction from touching another person who has been taking an antibiotic that a person is sensitive to. With that said, there could be enough haptenated penicillin metabolites in bodily secretions to trigger a reaction in a highly allergic person. In other words, closed mouth kissing should be safe. ...Read more

Not related: and no way to know if you are truly allergic to penicillin except by getting professionally tested by an allergist or having a reaction after taking the medicine in any form and establishing a temporal relationship, if there's no alternative to penicillin, and you have a history of ? penicillin allergy, ask your doctor to consult an allergist, otherwise ask your doctor to prescribe an alternative ...Read more
