Would crushed prednisone power applied topically to acne help reduce swelling?

Terrible idea: You'll relieve the inflammation briefly at the cost of giving the bacteria a tremendous edge. If you have access to prednisone and are going to use it off-label, why not get with a competent physician who can manage your acne scientifically? Wouldn't that make more sense? I've got awful hives and was prescribed prednisone today to help with itching and swelling. So far it hasn't helped - how long does it take to work?

Depends: On the hives, prednisone dose, other medications you are on, the cause for the hives, if any. Kindly see your doctor and consider referral to a dermatologist or an allergist, meanwhile, unless contraindicated, you can take OTC antihistamines, preferably the newer ones, as cetirizine or loratadine, twice a day, which is double the recommended dose, till you see your doctor/specialist, best wishes ...Read more

If I have local swelling, how long will it take for prednisone to start working, if at all? Prescribed 60mg/daily for 12 days.

If I have local swelling, how long will it take for prednisone to start working, if at all? Prescribed 60mg/daily for 12 days.

Depends on cause: and diagnosis. If your question is that you have been taking Prednisone 60 mg for 12 days and still have swelling, I would have your doc re-evaluate you. If you have not started, then at 60 mg Prednisone IF it is going to work at all - should work relatively quickly- 1-2 days. Note you should probably taper OFF Prednisone at that dose for that long. ...Read more
