Does smelling polyurethane in a room with it painted/refinished months ago cause miscarriage risk? Is there a diff in danger between freshly painted poly vs poly that has been off gassing for months?

Minimal risk: The medical literature suggests polyurethane fumes can increase miscarriage risk but the risk is not quantified. Because millions of pregnant women have been exposed to these fumes i'd presume the risk is low but in general risks increase with higher degrees of exposure. Freshly painted poly will off-gas more than older poly but the stronger the odor the more you are being exposed. See comment:. ...Read more

Floors were redone in apt below mine with polyurethane. Smell came into my place and was very strong. They said it was safe for me to stay. Was it?

General guidelines: Suggest that those who might be especially affected by fumes--pregnant woman, elderly and sick and young children--should avoid exposure. Brief exposure such as you describe might cause some lung irritation or aggravation of asthma (if you have it) or a headache, but this brief exposure should not have worrisome long term health effects for you. Stay well:) ...Read more

Had wood floors refinished with oil-based polyurethane. Kept kids out of home 3 days, but smell (fumes?) persist, causing headaches in 5-yr-old. WWYD?

Open up house: I would get the kids out of house again if they are symptomatic and open up your windows and doors to allow as much aeration as possible. How much does risk of cancer increase from exposure to polyurethane fumes? When and how should we start screening kids for cancer due to the exposure?

Hard to quantify: Depends on how much exposure, for how long. For typical household refinishing floors and letting things air out before you come back in house, probably pretty hard to say there's a direct link or need for rapid screening. If there is a more prolonged and heavy exposure, would be a good idea to see what you can do to reduce it and consider talking with your kids' doc. ...Read more
