I am on CiproBay and Pyridium (phenazopyridine) for a UTI, is it possible to drink alcohol whilst on these antibiotics?
Yes, in moderation: Alcohol will not interfere with ciprofloxacin (CiproBay) or phenazopyridine (Pyridium) and will not increase side effects. Don't drink to excess; heavy alcohol interferes with immune system fighting infection. FYI, phenazopyridine isn't an antibiotic, but a urinary anesthetic that helps reduce symptoms; OK to stop when painful urination and urgency gone, usually 1-2 days. Not good: First off, alcohol is a depressant so it makes it harder for the meds to work. Second Prozac (fluoxetine) can raise your blood alcohol levels as much as 50%. An occasional beer or glass of wine with dinner may be ok, but its best to avoid alcohol while contending with depression. HOW MUCH?: They will be additive regarding sedation. That's not a good idea for driving, gutter cleaning, tree trimming and other things where you don't want to doze off. Also the amount of drink is a real factor. Check with dr who prescribed Celexa (citalopram) and get dr's opinion re anxiety, depression, alcohol. Therapy may be indicated.
