Usually not serious: It's more like 50% of adult Americans who have HSV1, moslty oral but often genital. HSV2 genital herpes is more important: more outbreaks and much more sexual transmission than HSV1. Most of the seriousness of herpes is psychological: sense of contamination & fear of transmission. Routine testing for HSV is controversial: HSV1 is so common and usually not an STD, and HSV2 tests can be misleading. ...Read more

What can I do to limit the amount of HSV 1 (gential area) outbreaks I get?

Antivirals can help: Genital herpes is usually due to hsv2 and can have higher recurrence/re-activation rates. Remember the virus is dormant in nerve cells and can re-activate during times of stress. Suppressive antiviral therapy can be used in individuals with frequent and/or particularly symptomatic relapses. See your board certified dermatologist to be evaluated. ...Read more

If 1 has HSV 2 and has only had outbreaks around the oral area, does that mean (s)he can still get the symptoms around the genital area in the future?

Maybe: The lab tests for herpes simplex I and ii are imperfect and subject to false positives and negatives, and HSV ii acquired on the mouth usually stays there. Since diagnosis and treatment / prevention are based primarily on the clinical picture, and are largely empirical, i'd urge you to relax. And congratulations on your proactive approach to your health. ...Read more

Is it possible to get hsv-2 in your mouth if you have genital herpes?

Not usually: Genital herpes, HSV -2 generally remains localized to the genital area. You could get HSV -1 lesions in the mouth. Primary HSV -2 can also occur in the mouth with oral sex. It may be that the lesions are not herpes at all. It is not feasible to know the nature of the lesions without examining you. You should see a doctor.

My gf just found out she has genital hsv-1, we have been together for 6 months, I read that symptoms show 2-20 days after, how did she just get it now?

Symptoms: Symptoms related to hsv-1 can indeed show up days to weeks after infection, however they can also not show up for months or years. Some people contract hsv and never have symptoms, making it impossible to tell if they have it unless doing a test for it. All the best! ...Read more

Got hsv-1 gential at 18 years old. I had one outbreak the first year and have had 6 since- I'm 32 now. The only confirmed outbreak was when I was pregnant and it was one lesion on the anus. Is this many outbreaks normal for genital hsv-1?

Yes: Yes, this is considered the normal pattern for HSV-1. What we generally see is that the outbreaks decrease in frequency over time after the first 12-18 months. From my experience, there's a lot of variability but generally speaking, a lot of people will still get outbreaks once a year, commonly as a result of high stress or an unrelated cold. Hope this helps ...Read more

I have HSV 1. If I perform oral sex on a woman and she becomes infected and then we have intercourse can I then get genital herpes?

No: Hsv 1 is generally considered to be the oral herpes, but as you note it can be transmitted to the genitals of your partner via oral sex. You can not infect yourself with your own herpes virus - and it can not be transmitted back to you from your partner. While your immune system is not able to rid you of the herpes virus, it is quite competent to prevent spread of the virus with-in your body. ...Read more

HSV-1 in genital region. First outbreak was on vagina, since then I only get them essentially at the top of the crease of my buttocks. Has it moved?

Maybe not herpes: Most genital herpes due to HSV1 does not recur, or only infrequently. And herpes is uncommon in the buttocks crease; can occur, but unusual. Most likely the butt crease problem is something other than herpes. See a doctor during an outbreak so it can be tested for HSV, then you'll know for sure. Good luck! ...Read more

Hsv1+ and hsv2- for blood antibodies. Had cold sores before. Can I also get genital hsv 1 if exposed? Having swollen glands in groin. Itchy and tingle

No: If a person has antibodies to HSV1 (has immunity), she should not get new HSV1 infections in places that she did not get HSV1 sores in the past. New herpes lesions on the genitals would be presumed HSV2 (if the HSV2 antibodies turned positive on the blood tests after the new genital herpes sores). Life can surprise you sometimes. Maybe HSV1 was in the genitals in the past but wasn't noticeable. ...Read more
