No: That's not how stool softeners and laxatives work. The laxatives are absorbed in your stomach upper intestine much as other meds are , then are in your blood stream to cause contractions of the muscle in intestine. Not at all affected by liquid consumed. Softeners, while they stay in the colon/intestine, act by attracting water into the intestine, so having water there would only help in this ...Read more

Anytime now: Some slow activity- ileus is not uncommon, followed by poor appetite leads to infrequent stool.
The worry is obstruction or abscess with persistent ileus but usually with pain, fever, vomiting etc..
