Low Vitamin D: About 15-20 minutes in the sun daily w/as little clothing on as possible will help. It depends on where you live. In NE USA during the summer is ok but beyond that it won't do much. Talk w/your doc or a nutritionist about supplementing w/DC which is easily available an inexpensive. D3 level between 50 and 80 is what the experts suggest. ...Read more

My vitamin d is low despite prescription supplements. Gallbladder removed long ago so may not absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Should i try ox bile?

Low vitamin D3: There may be a group of patients who do not absorb vitamin d3 efficiently. They seem to require higher doses of d3 ( 6000 to 10000 units daily) to achieve adequate blood levels, (between 40 and 70). Don't give up, stay on your vitamin d3 and get annual blood level. Your gallbladder surgery is likely unrelated. ...Read more

Can guess based on:: It's possible to get adequate vitamin d from sun exposure in spring ; summer- about 15 minutes of sun between 10-3 gives most people enough d if you don't use sunscreen. So if you get sun you have probably been deficient since the fall; if you avoid sun or use sunscreen it's possible you have been deficient for years. My vitamin d level is 9, I am in the middle east and wear head scarf, for how long do I need to sit under the sun and what is the time?

Long time: We figure 20-30 minutes of "full body" - read bikini or "birthday suit" exposure for adequate skin conversion in the central il mid summer sun. If only a small portion of skin is exposed it will take quite a while. I would suggest adding in a vit d3 supplement to augment the sun and keep your measured level above 50 for all the health benefits vit d provides! ...Read more

Usually: Physicians put patients with pain or bone loss and Vitamin D deficiency on huge doses once a week or for one week then drop it down to a lower dose. It is true that some find that to cause bone pain and GI upset. In that case you may want to try 4000 units a day for a few weeks and then go back down to 2000 units a day and have your blood levels rechecked at three months. Also use D3, not D2. ...Read more

Vitamin D 25-OH: level of 23 is technically insufficient- over 30 is preferred. Depending on what other symptoms or medical problems exist, the best way to boost your low Vitamin D with SUPPLEMENTS is either with daily Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) 1,000-3,000 IU or weekly Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) 50,000. ...Read more
