What happens if 40mg simvastatin is taken every other day instead of daily? Does that mean it is working at the 20mg strength?

Probably: We usually recommend patients take their medications daily. The way to confirm if it is working or not is to take it every other day for 90 days, then recheck your labs. If the numbers are similar to daily lower dose, then you should be fine going forward. ...Read more

...: You will have to continue to monitor this with routine LFTs. elevation in LFts secondary to statin therapy is usually evident in the first 3 months of therapy and is dose dependent. It is recommended to decrease dose or change med if ALT is 3 times the upper limit of normal. If that's the case, pravachol (pravastatin) may ve an option since it is primarily metabolized by the kidneys. ...Read more

Psych has prescribed D3 5, 000 iu, B12 500 mcg & Rhodiola 400/600 mgs daily for depression. I also take simvastatin and levothyroxine. Is it ok to take?

Snake oil: Hi. Vitamin D3 is awesome for vitamin D deficiency, and oral vitamin B12 is awesome for vitamin B12 deficiency that is not due to pernicious anemia (autoimmune B12 defic.), but they are not a treatment for depression. There are no scientific data to support rhodiola for depression. They're all very nice placebo for depression. At least simvastatin and l-thyroxine are being used for real reasons (?) ...Read more

I'm taking 10mg of simvastatin every night, can I take raspberry ketones that contain grapefruit (powder)?

Interesting question: Grapefruit juice can interact and raise simvastain levels. I'm not aware that grapefruit powder has ever been studied. You could try it but be aware that if you get muscle aches, you may need to eliminate the rk or lower the dose of simvastatin. At 18, why are you taking Simvastatin anyway?! ...Read more

Not high: Those numbers may be technically "high" in the lab you're using but they're not of biologic importance, being normal in most labs or only slightly above normal. I suggest you avoid alcohol and repeat the test in a few weeks. Simvastatin can raise liver tests but they often return to normal with continued use and/or resolve with dose reduction-your doc can decide which is preferable. ...Read more

A: A heart rate of 48-52 is not concerning as long as you are not having symptoms associated with it (shortness of breath, dizziness, chest discomfort, fatigue). If you are using your fingers or machine to check your pulse and if you are in afib, it is also possible that you may not be picking up all your heartbeats because of the irregular rhythm. Dr switched me back to 40mg simvastatin after taking 20mg lipitor (atorvastatin). Should I get off the Lipitor (atorvastatin) for a few days before starting simvastatin?

Not necessary: Simvastatin 40mg is similar in potency to 20mg of lipitor (atorvastatin). There is no need to stop Lipitor (atorvastatin) for a few days before starting Simvastatin as they are similar drugs (both are statins). The Simvastatin can be started the day after stopping the Lipitor (atorvastatin) -- for most efficacy, take a statin at bedtime. ...Read more

Good ideas-both!: I think your ideas are terrific, and I'd implement them immediately. In so doing you could get your labs rechecked in about one month and see if any positive impact. Having said that, I think its a good idea to still follow your doctor's advice. A liver ultrasound is quite benign (even on the pocketbook, relatively speaking!) and helps exclude important considerations such as gallstone and cancer ...Read more

My doctor prefers pravastatin 80mg over Lipitor (atorvastatin) 20mg or simvastatin 40mg. Says it is safer but can't really tell me why. Anyone agree and if so, why?

Drug interactions: Pravastatin is metabolized differently than Lipitor (atorvastatin) or simvastatin. It may reduce the risk of adverse effects caused by interactions with other medications metabolized in the liver. (lovastatin, simvastatin, or Atorvastatin are oxidized by cytochrome p450 3a4 [cyp3a4], which is inhibited by many drugs. Pravastatin or fluvastatin are not oxidized by cyp3a4). ...Read more
