When taking doxycycline hyclate 100mg with food, how big or small should the meal be? And what should I avoid in the meal?

When taking doxycycline hyclate 100mg with food, how big or small should the meal be? And what should I avoid in the meal?

EXACTLY WHY????: How often? Details matter. Are you taking it for Lyme disease? Acne? For what? If you are taking it for acne the blood level is not important. If taking it for serious infection, then absorption can be a problem. Taking with food, especially calcium-rich food, may reduce absorption. On the other hand, doxycycline on an empty stomach may cause nausea. ...Read more

How to take doxycycline? During meals or 1 hour before / after? Can you have milk with it?

How to take doxycycline? During meals or 1 hour before / after? Can you have milk with it?

It doesn't matter: There is slightly reduced absorption of doxycycline when taken with antacids, calcium, or high calcum foods such as dairy products. But the stress is on "slightly", almost certainly not enough to make any difference in its effectiveness. In other words, don't worry about it -- just take it with the frequency and for the duration as prescribed and don't worry about the details. ...Read more

Having Zinc Acetate & Doxycycline-LB tabs, 1.5 hours after meal, for acne. Have severe nausea & discomfort after having tabs, for 10-15 mins. Advice?

Yes: Get yourself onto a better acne regimen. Stop taking the zinc; it's generally bad for you, probably won't touch your acne, and it's probably making you sick. That leaves you on just tetracycline, and you must not take just an antibiotic for acne. Add topical benzoyl peroxide. If the tetracycline makes you sick, or this doesn't help, consider isotretinoin if severe and/or a different regimen. ...Read more

Can I eat cornbread or other foods made with milk while taking doxycycline?

Can I eat cornbread or other foods made with milk while taking doxycycline?

Good question: Doxycycline may have a somewhat limited absorption when taken with calcium or iron containing foods, because it will 'chelate' or bind to those minerals and may not absorb quite as well. Ideally, you could take the doxycycline with a full glass of water, THEN eat 30 min or so after that... There can be nausea as a side effect though, so you might need to eat something to help with that. ...Read more

Want to eat plenty of plain yogurt while on doxycycline to prevent yeast, gut symptoms. If I eat it hours after my dose, will still interfere w doxy?

Doxycycline ; dairy: Dairy products can interfere with the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, including doxycycline, but the clinical significance is unclear. Tetracycline antibiotics can upset the stomach, so it is sometimes advised to take them with food, although they are best absorbed on an empty stomach. Is it possible to first experience side effects after a week of being on doxycycline? I suddenly have bad unexplained stomach cramps whenever I eat.

Possible: Doxycycline can certainly cause gut upset and it may begin several days after beginning treatment. This may occur if you aren't always careful to take with bland food and adequate liquid. Spicy food, empty stomach makes stomach cramps more likely. But avoid antacids which can bind the antibiotic & keep it from being absorbed. If symptoms persist, though check with your doctor! ...Read more
