What Dosage Of Kaopectate Can I Give A Three Year Old
Per pediatrician: If a 3 yr old is having diarrhea, then he/she needs to see the primary care pediatrician. Over the counter remedies are not recommended, they may mask an underlying problem. It is best to give fluids such as pedialyte for this age group, and if the diarrhea does not subside in a day or two then the pediatrician will guide you. The child will likely need stool testing to determine the cause. ...Read more

My 97 year old mother has bad diarrhea from Levaquin (levofloxacin). Is it better to give her Kaopectate or Immodium for relief?
The flu is going around my house and my 3 1/2 yr old daughter has it and she has the vomiting but not the diarrhea. But can I give her kaopectate (kaolin and pectin)?
Just to Clarify:
I agree with above but just to make a few things plain:
flu (influenza) presents with fever, cough, muscle & joint aches. Never give a child Aspirin when they have fever & viral illness because of very rare risk of developing reyes syndrome. Kaopectate (kaolin and pectin) has aspirin.
Does child above with vomiting have "flu"? If no fever & other members just diarrhea and vomiting maybe not. But safer no kaopectate (kaolin and pectin). ...Read more
Castor oil ugh!: Why in the world would you want to give your child such awful stuff? I assume she is constipated. If so an adjustment of her diet may be all that is necessary. For example cut down on the milk and dairy products, add more fruits and vegetables to the diet. Figs, prunes and dates also work well as natural laxatives. ...Read more
No: Before giving meds, you need to talk to your md. He/she may want to determine the cause of the vomiting. If your child has appendicitis, for example, you will only be delaying the diagnosis and put your child's health at risk. In any event, most pediatricians would not use Promethazine in a 3 year old at this time. ...Read more
My 2 (almost 3) year old has been on a high dosage of clindamycin for 2 months and has now busted her ear drum. Is it safe to give her ibueprofen, too?
Yes,but: Most are not needed if the child has a normal diet. I don't like the "candy" vitamin preparations & prefer the liquids until you can have a conversation with the kid & warn them about taking "medicines" that are not theirs. Many a kid whose stomach i had pumped out told me they found their candy vitamin in the ladies purse. ...Read more
Sure, but why?: A child with a normal diet never needs the "supplemental" next step formulas. Special needs children should be followed by a nutritionist to optimize growth potential and development. A lot of parents feel children in lower percentiles for weight need extra nutrition, but nearly always that's false. Please ask your pediatrician for a thorough nutritional check. ...Read more
