I am almost 5 months post natal and have a sore area at the top of my head almost where you would find a babies soft spot. What could this be?
Possibilities: Dermatology is pretty visual, so it's hard to know what is going on without seeing it. Tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp) can present this way, as can an inflamed cyst, or even a localized bacterial infection (abscess or folliculitis). A dermatologist should be able to help sort this out either by close examination, culture, or perhaps skin biopsy. ...Read more
Very tender spot on top of head where babies get soft spots that burns when touched sometimes. Liquid comes out (clear smooth liquid). What is this?
Scalp lesion?: The bones of the skull should have been fused for a very long time now (you are 26, right?). I suspect that what you are referring to is a superficial scalp lesion; however, the only way to determine is to be seen by a physician so that they can examine the area of concern and then treat accordingly. Take care of you can make an appointment. ...Read more
I have a beauty spot on my cheek and 2 days ago it started bleeding for no apparent reason. What does this mean ?
13month baby has a red spot on her cheek for 8+ weeks. Not healing. Initially looked like a zit. Now just red. About 3mm. No halo. What could it be?
What is the probability that my baby has/will have nerve damage? I accidentally pinched her cheek for about a second when I clipped the baby carrier closed. Now she has a red spot/bruise and a pinhole scrape (about 1 mm) where the pinch was.
Zero: Nerves here are twigs and regrow quickly even if injured and they are surprisingly tough -- more than the surrounding tissue ...Read more
Normal or not ?: Studies in the late 80's documented 2-4% of normal infants retain a detectable soft spot at 24mo. Persistence of this feature is common to medical conditions like hypothyroidism & a variety of named syndromes. If your child is growing & developing well, i see no need to worry over this issue. If there are developmental or other health issues, bring this to the attention of your doctor. ...Read more
I was born with no soft spot on my head but i don't have any head deformaties, does this mean I have craniocynostosis?
No: I have seen "soft spots" the size of a pea, or the size of an open hand. As long as the growth plates of the skull push away from each other (don't fuse), normal skull growth in size & shape can occur. ...Read more
Good day Dr. I have a 22days old baby boy with a pink spot at the back of his head neck, so I would like to know what must I do to remove it,?
Nothing: Without seeing the spot in person it's difficult to provide a certain diagnosis. Many babies are born with "stork bites" -red/salmon colored areas - on the back of their necks/heads. It is a birthmark and nothing to worry about and will fade over time on it's own. If you are still concerned please have a pediatrician evaluate it before subjecting your baby to unnecessary and potentially harmful tx ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Why would a 5 year old still have a soft spot on his head my sons 5 years old and he still has his sof spot on top of his head like a baby dose
See your doctor.: The soft spot (fontanelle) should close between 1 and 2 years of age. There are various medical conditions that can cause it to remain open longer. I encourage you to see your child's doctor as soon as possible to evaluate this issue. Good luck! ...Read more
Will a flat spot on a child's head, older than 2 years old, continue to minimize over time as their head grows? We were told our sons head would round
The practice of: putting babies to sleep on their backs has contributed to more "flat heads." Some have treated this with a helmut, usually at 4-12 months of age, though it is not clear this is more effective than trying to avoid lying on back during the day.As the child and his skull grows, the flattening will improve. It may not be perfectly symmetrical, but is not a cosmetic/social/brain development problem ...Read more

See your Peds doc!: There are some congenital abnormalities that are related to premature closure of the cranial sutures (craniosynostosis). In layman terms- areas of the head that can close early resulting in skull deformities. Some need to be fixed by surgery. There are some that are clearly positional- with modifying sleep habits or using a helmet- these deformities can be solved. Some are completely normal. ...Read more
No: I don't believe this would be the reason for premature closure. ...Read more
I have an area on the top of my head (where a baby's soft spot is) that is indented and it hurts very badly when I touch it. Is this serious?
Indentation: At your age you should not have a soft spot in your skull. I would see your doctor and possible a skull film to examine the thickness of your bone in your skull. It is possible you have an infection in your scalp but typically that would cause the skin to swell or stick out and bulge, not indent in. ...Read more
Depends: This issue has emerged since the 90's when we shifted to back sleeping to avoid SIDS. Many self correct when they begin to sit upright & get out of the position that prolongs it.Some who sleep leaning to one or other side develop a neck muscle issue and need stretching exercises.Rare kids might benefit from a helmet. These treatments are all dependent on a good evaluation done with your doc. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Yes: The soft spot, or anterior fontanelle, remains open until about age 2 years. This allows the brain to grow freely without waiting for the skull bones to keep up. At 18 months the fontanelle may still be present, may be small, or it may seem closed. As long as the baby's head circumference is growing in the normal range, the fontanelle is fine. ...Read more
Could my child have craniosynostosis if her head shape is normal but in the 10th percentile for circumference and a tiny soft spot?
Baby has flat spot right back side and in front left side. Will her head shape be fine later or will it be same. Worried. Birth time she was fine. ?
"back to sleep": When it was established that putting an infant tummy side down increased the risk of SIDS, parents were told to put infants on their backs to sleep. Since an infant's skull is very malleable, it can cause flattening of the back of the skull. Give your baby plenty of tummy time while awake. As her brain grows and her sleep position varies, this flattening may get less apparent with time. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
