What Does Volvulus Feel Like
No: Volvulus is twisting of the intesting and, in general, if not untwisted within 6 hours, the bowel will die. There are children with a chronic volvulus that is tolerated. It is not acceptable to leave a volvulus untreated. The basis for it is a condition called malrotation. The intestine does not rotate properly in utero, a setup allowing it to twist at any time. ...Read more
Rarely: Volvulus is a twisting of the GI tract. It can occur at the stomach level, small bowel and proximal colon or the sigmoid colon. Some activities such as laxative abuse may predispose to volvulus. Oftentimes volvulus occurs due to congenital non fixation of the intestine. Any frequent severe abdominal pain associated with bilious (green) vomiting needs prompt evaluation. ...Read more

If left untreated, the gut can die & start leaking contents & germs into the abdomen. This can be fatal. ...Read more

Quite possibly: You say your small intestine was knotted up. That could indeed be midgut volvulus in which your small bowel was twisted around a narrow mesentery, or connection of the bowel to the back of the abdominal cavity. That is almost always seen in intestinal malrotation, when the bowel did not situate in the right location in the abdomen as it was being formed in the fetus. ...Read more
Until it Resolves: Volvulus describes 180 (+) degree twisting of the intestine, causing a bowel obstruction inevitably leading to necrosis or rupture unless it resolves, either spontaneously, by endoscopic or radiologic decompression, or surgical rx. The best method depends on the location & cause of the "twist" and the stability of the patient. ...Read more

Cecal volvulus: The cecum is the first part of the large intestine. A volvulus results when the bowel twists on its blood supply. This will cause an obstruction of the intestine which will lead to abdominal distention (swelling) and an inability to have a bowel movement. The treatment is to untwist it and may require removal of that part of the intestine. It is often the result of severe constipation. ...Read more
