Test for syphilis - what do RPR reac and vdrl reac mean?

Test for syphilis - what do RPR reac and vdrl reac mean?

Screening tests.: Vdrl (venerial disease research laboratory) tests against anti-cardiolipin antibodies and RPR (papid plasma reagin) tests against nonspecific antibodies suggestive of syphilis and are screening tests. Treponemal antibody tests, like fta-abs and mha-tp usually become positive two to five weeks after the initial infection. These are used to confirm syphilis and stay positive, even after therapy. ...Read more

Rpr (Definition)

Rapid plasma reagin (rpr) is a blood test that looks for non-specific antibodies that may indicate that the organism (treponema pallidum) that causes syphilis is present. The term "reagin" means that this test does not look for antibodies against the actual bacterium, but rather for antibodies against substances released by cells when they ...Read more

What is the definition or description of: vdrl/rpr positive for syphilis?

Antibodies: Ok. Lets separate these first. The venereal disease research laboratory test or vdrl is a blood test for syphilis and was developed by the former venereal disease research laboratory. Rapid plasma reagin (rpr) refers to a type of test that looks for non-specific antibodies in the blood of the patient that may indicate that the organism (treponema pallidum) that causes syphilis is present. ...Read more

How accurate would a RPR test be for late latent syphilis (approx. 24-30 months after unprotected sex)? Or would a FTA-ABS/VDRL be more accurate?

How accurate would a RPR test be for late latent syphilis (approx. 24-30 months after unprotected sex)? Or would a FTA-ABS/VDRL be more accurate?

Both are good: Both are good accurate tests. Most labs start with the inexpensive RPR as a screening test and the do an FTABS if positive. Some labs go straight for VDRL or FTABS. Either way is fine. Both work great. ...Read more

Confirmatory test: You need to have a confirmatory test (sometimes called an fta) to tell the difference between a false postivite test, which is common, and a true infection. ...Read more

My RPR test was a positive with a titer 1:1 for syphilis. What does that mean? Is that bad?

My RPR test was a positive with a titer 1:1 for syphilis. What does that mean? Is that bad?

Syphilis testing: All syphilis is "bad": it is a very dangerous infection, even if causing no symptoms at this time. However, low positive results might indicate you were treated without knowing it, e.g. if you received certain antibiotics for other infections. Or it might be a false positive test, so confirmatory testing is needed. Discuss w/ your doctor, or best to see an STD or infectious diseases specialist. ...Read more

I was tested for syphilis. RPR was pisitive (1:1) and TPPA was negative. Does in mean I am infected?

Syphilis: Probably not. The RPR is a screening test which is very sensitive but not as specific, so that you can have false-positive results. The TPPA is far more specific and used to detect the RPR positives that are falsely positive. ...Read more

I had syphilis in 2014. The RPR was 1:128. Got 3 penicilin shots. My most recent blood test shows RPR 1:4. does that mean I got reinfected?

I had syphilis in 2014. The RPR was 1:128. Got 3 penicilin shots. My most recent blood test shows RPR 1:4. does that mean I got reinfected?

Probably not: Successful cure is defined by a 3-dilution decline in RPR or VDRL titer. Your decline is 5 diultions, so probably all is well. However, if your titer previously declined to a lower level, i.e. negative or under 1:4 and now has risen to 1:4, reinfection is possible. Best to discuss with the doctor or clinic where you were treated, but most likely no problem. ...Read more

I got a negative rpr test 3 weeks after exposure. Am I safe with syphilis?

Probably: Repeat it at eight weeks. It's not a bad idea for a guy with a social life to get checked for HIV and syphilis yearly. If the syphilis test turns up positive, there's plenty of time before any damage can be done. ...Read more

Asked yesterday but question was not really answered. Which comes positive first for syphilis RPR or cia?

CIA?: An appropriate syphilis test involves two stages: the RPR is done FIRST- if positive, a confirmatory test such as an "FTA-ABS' or an "EIA for TPA" must be done. The 2-stage test is more cost effective and decreases the number of 'false positive' results. Discuss this important question further with your ordering doctor. ...Read more

Can RPR blood test be able to detect if you have syphilis years ago?

Will an RPR test find Syphilis infection even if it has been 2, 6, 10, years from infection?

RPR: An RPR is a screening test for syphilis. It looks for antibodies present in the blood of people who may have the disease. A negative test is considered normal. A positive test may mean that you have syphilis. However, false positives can occur. If the screening test RPR is positive, the diagnosis is confirmed with more specific testing. ...Read more

Can RPR test for syphilis give false negative? If syphilis is highly suspected should I retest for it?

Prozone effect: False (-) in RPR syphilis testing occurs when there is a prozone effect. Why? It's because the concentration of syphilis antibodies is so high, it interferes with the antigen-antibody interactions that result in a (+) reaction. A false (-) result can also occur during primary syphilis since not enough time has
passed to allow high enough antibody levels for a (+) reaction to occur. ...Read more

Have a headache that's persited for 4days now. Minds feels cloudy. Suspecting syphilis had RPR was negative. Supected exposure was 4years ago.

Syphilis and neg rpr: Syphilis as a cause of headache is not common. Considering your RPR was negative and your exposure was 4 years ago, this is probably not the cause.

No: With 3 negative RPRs since January, there is no reason to suspect syphillis unless you just contracted it. There is much more risk of false positive test results with RPR than false negatives. Hope this helps. ...Read more

How long would the RPR syphilis test be accurate after infection. Would it be accurate between 1-2 years after exposure or is it less reliable then?

How long would the RPR syphilis test be accurate after infection. Would it be accurate between 1-2 years after exposure or is it less reliable then?

Very reliable: First, RPR is no longer the usual first blood test for syphilis. Most labs now start with an IgG ELISA. Either this or RPR is always positive within 6 weeks. In other words, a negative test more than 6 weeks after the last posssible exposure, including 1-2 years, proves you do not have active syphilis. However, a positive results isn't necessarily reliable; positives require confirmatory testing. ...Read more

Imm (une memory last: Your immune system may always have a small positive antibody response to the former presence of the syphilis, and the very weak reaction (via RPR) indicates past treatment was effective. If you are referring to confirmatory testing for infectivity still being positive, then it is also possible that you have been re=exposed and may need retreatment. Not always: VDRL is still time honored inexpensive test for mass screening of syphilis, some times will give false positive results, then need as in yours, more specific tests like like RPR, FTA-RBS etc type of tests are needed Check with your doctor, Doxycycline may not be right drug, First diagnosis has to be established before undergoing any treatment. ...Read more
