Also known as manic-depressive illness, bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that in its most severe form causes dramatic shifts in mood, from mania to depression. Symptoms of mania include markedly elevated mood and energy, reduced sleep and a reduced need for sleep, racing thoughts, and grandiose ideas. When mood changes are severe, psychotic ideation may be present. Symptoms of depression can include low energy, feeling sad, feelings of guilt and hopelessness that are out of proportion to the patient's actual situation, low motivation, inability to experience pleasure, and suicidal ideation. Several approaches: Just lowering the dose sometimes is enough to help; not infrequently, if needed, the dose can be raised again later without a return of the agitation. Adding a second mediction to reduce the agitation such as Ativan or Cogentin (benztropine) also can work. Or, switching to a different antidepressant may do the trick. I take 400 mg lamictal 40 Paxil (paroxetine) .5-1 clonopin for bipolar/anxiety. Slept well at first now restless at night and nap 2-4 hrs. During the day. Help!

I have frequent agitation and a very poor short term memory. I take lithium for bipolar and just started tegretol. Should that help?
Bipolar and memory: First and foremost you should not have toxic level of lithium and tegretol. Both can cause severe memory impairment with high levels. Next your thyroid needs to be checked since both will affect thyroid function and cause similar problem.
