Why is it not standard to do thyroid antibodies on someone with hypothyroid symptoms but a normal tsh?
May not be thyroid: Symptoms are often similar for a number of dieases. If symptoms suggest a certain disease a screening test will often be done. If the screening test is negative (TSH) further, more specific testing (thyroid antibodies) is usually not indicated. If symptoms persist with no other explanation, re-evaluation of a certain diagnosis may be indicated. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Do i need treatment if my TSH 7.69 high normal free T4 and free T3 (liothyronine) and elevated thyroid antibodies?
Yes: Tsh 7.69 with high tpo is not "high normal" but high and indicates hypothyroidism. Having high tpo indicates autoimmune or hashimoto's thyroiditis. I suggest adding selenium zinc b complex and vitamin c and iodine and avoiding gluten for a month and rechecking levels in a month. If no change then you might need thyroid supplementation. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Work with your team: When people just don't feel right in a general way, blood tests such as you had rarely give the answer. You need to find a provider (either MD or NP) who will listen to your complaints, get more history, and not just order tests. Perhaps you are not getting enough sleep or have some form of depression or mood disorder. Lots to consider and you need to see someone for more than 10-15 minutes ...Read more

Thyroid Ab's and...: Many people who are clinically hypothyroid have normal tests as what is normal is debatable. Many believe any TSH above 3 is too high, some even above 2. Suppressed TSH 0.02 for about two, months that I know of. Free T3 (liothyronine) and T4 Normal. Thyroid antibodies Normal. Thyroid ultrasound normal? Confused?help!
2 possibilities: Hi. This could still be a phase of a subacute thyroiditis, although the window of time on that possibility is closing. The other is one or more autonomously hyper-functioning nodules, which in NOT ruled out by your ultrasound. An 123-Iodine uptakes and scan would clarify the issue: VERY low uptakes in subacute thyroiditis, and normal uptakes with hot spot(s) on scan image in toxic nodule(s). ...Read more

Dosing: Hi. Most systems are not that sensitive! I would suggest trying 12.5 mcg on even days of the month and 25 mcg on odd days of the mont. This will give you an average daily dose of 18.75 mcg, and should give you a nice, normal TSH. But to reiterate, most systems are not that sensitive. Make sure you're well equilibrated (dose at least 6 weeks) before testing. Good luck! ...Read more
What does it mean when someone, who has never taken any thyroid meds, has at times high TSH (5.6 uIU/ml) and at times normal TSH (2.6 uIU/ml)?

I have hashimotos disease normal TSH and norml t 3 and T4 , but high antibodies , do I need medication?
Hashimoto's thyroid : It means you have hashimoto's thyroid disease but your thyroid function is currently normal. This might be because you are taking the correct dose of thyroid hormone replacement or because your thyroid is still able to make normal amount of hormone despite the insults from the antibodies. If this is the case, monitor your thyroid function closely because you will become hypothyroid in the future. ...Read more
