What Does Low Creatinine Serum Mean
My blood creatinine, serum is 0.50. The lab said it was low. What does this mean? How can I get it to be normal? I am 56 years old. S
You are normal: Creatinine levels are a reflection of muscle mass and kidney function. Bad kidney function never results in low creatinine. If you are skinny and do not eat much meat, your creatinine may be lower than "normal" but it is not abnormal at all. There is no need to try to increase your creatinine. ...Read more
When creatinine serum blood level is low 0.6, does this mean kidney is filtering good. What are muscle wasting symptoms & causes.?
High creatinine: Before I can answer your question, I need to know your height and weight. If you are a tall person with a large amount of muscle mass, it is less serious than if you have less muscle mass. See a nephrologist to take a history to see if you have high BP or diabetes. You also need a renal ultrasound and a 24 hour urine collection to assess your renal function and to see if you have proteinuria. ...Read more
Serum creatinine: By itself, your serum creatinine (C) is within normal limits. C is dependent on age, sex, race and weight. As you did not mention any personal information, ask the physician (P) who ordered the test. I suspect that if there were a problem with your C level, the P would have told you and you have nothing to worry about. Good luck. ...Read more
What does it mean if my BUN is 22, BUN Creatinine 26 and creatinine serum is 0.86? I am a 54 yr old woman
All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your creatinine is normal. Your BUN is slightly elevated and may be because you were fasting when the blood was drawn and were dehydrated from not drinking water.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Practice safe sex. ...Read more
My creatinine serum is 0.73 and I've been told this is "low"...should I be concerned? My BUN/creatinine was 23. Should I be concerned healthwise?
Okay, ...: Serum creatinine reflects personal lean muscle mass; so, your lean muscle may be on low side. The bottom line is your personal functionality in managing the tasks & chores of daily living for survival, growth, and continuation. If adequate, leave it alone and live on; if not, go for a comprehensive evaluation & counseling. ...Read more
Serum creatinine 0.49mg/dL, 24h urine cr 22.1mg/dL & cr excretion 884mg, cr clearance 125.4mL/min, random urine cr 109, 7mg/dL. Normal? If low, why?
Just ignore this: Labs are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. This could not be due to illness. Be thankful for a normal creatinine clearance and that your physician took time to check it. ...Read more
What exactly does it mean when my bun/creatinine ratio is 23 but my creatinine serum level is. 77?
What means an urine-to plasma creatinine ratio > 200? My urine creatinine was 171mg/dl, serum creatinine 0.8mg/dl, ratio:213.
Nothing: This is a meaningless number that is primarily a function of how much water you were drinking. It's used to help calculate other labs. ...Read more
Hi, my son 6 years old, when healthy, had bloods done, results were low ferritin, low lymphocytes 1.8, low wbcs 4.6 and low serum creatinine.
Not to worry: All of these things, with the exception of the low ferritin, are fine. The low creatinine means his kidneys work uber-great! . The WBC likely reflects mild suppression from a recent viral illness. The low ferritin is very common, indicating he needs more iron in his diet or a supplement. Please do not get in the habit of focusing on lab numbers when your child is healthy. He is healthy - enjoy! ...Read more
My 8 month old son has been having some stomach issues and we just got some results back. I am curious to what a normal bun level, but a slightly higher creatinine serum level means. His ratio is also considered high.
Here are some...: You should refer your questions & concerns to his pediatrician who possesses more of his pertinent information than anyone online. Besides it is useful to always correlate the lab findings with individual clinical profile and compare with prior tests serially. To make a question easy to answer, always stress the specifics & relevance with sequence of events in the question. Best wish... ...Read more
5yr girl with 7 past urine tests in row show trace blood in it, no u.T.I.! so checked serum creatinine an it's ok but cbc, iron on low side, . Any clue?
? urine Ca/cr ratio: Sometimes this is a sampling issue, and a squat and pee sample is often a vaginal wash out with all sorts of things in it. If it is a good clean catch specimine I would wonder where the blood is coming from. Small amounts can accompany excess calcium loss through the kidney tubules. A spot check of the urine ca/cr can pick this up, usually some protein in the pee along with it. Talk with your doc. ...Read more
My lab reports are serum creatinine 80, GFR 72, and creatinine clearance 69.9. my 24 hr urine creatinine was 6.9 and spot urine 2.2. What does it mean?
Not much: You're 55 years old and -- congratulations -- a recovered problem drinker. Unless you're especially fit or heavily-muscled, your creatinine may be a bit high and maybe your kidneys are getting old -- but this level is perfectly compatible with good health and if you had serious kidney disease, it would be a lot worse by now. Eat sensibly, stay fit and I bet your kidneys will last a lifetime. ...Read more

Low creatinine serum, high creatinine clearance and normal urine cret at age 21. Totally sedentary lifestyle with high protein diet. What's thr prob?
Kidney problem?: With the information you provided, I do not think you have a problem with your kidneys. Creatinine is an indication of your kidney function and, just as important, is gives an estimation of your muscle mass. A high creatinine clearance may be seen with uncontrolled diabetes, which you do not have. Speak to the physician who ordered these tests on you for more information, he knows you best. ...Read more
I keep waking up with swollen hands no heart or kidney problems. Last blood work everything was fine the only thin low was my creatinine serum?
Swollen hands: Sorry but you need to be more precise as we need more info. When was your last blood work relative to swollen hands? If blood before these symptoms started, need repeat labs. Otherwise, time to consider autoimmune conditions. Or recent travel/camping. Ill contacts. New medications (perhaps b/c methylprednisolone), herbs, dietary supplements etc regardless of how natural pure & organic. Go c ur doc. ...Read more
0.6 to 1.4 mg/dL: Creatinine is a product of muscle metabolism. Because women generally have less muscle mass than men, their values are lower. Because of increased volume during pregnancy, lower limits of normal may be 0.4 -0.5 mg/dl. As an individual ages, the muscle mass may decline therefore the serum creatinine values may not adequately reflect the underlying renal function. ...Read more
Serum creatinine is affected by protein intake, gender, age, race, muscular build, and renal function. A rising creatinine is always of concern. "normal" on lab tests is generally less than 1.2 mg/dl.
Renal function can be estimated with a more complex formula or measured with a 24 h urine collection. See your internist for further evaluation. ...Read more
